Dentist announces congressional candidacy at leadership conference

By Craig Palmer Washington—The nation's dental leaders came to the nation's capital to lobby Congress on issues important to the profession, more than 100 here for their first Washington Leadership Conference.

"We need your fresh ideas," Dr. John S. Findley, ADA president, said to hearty applause welcoming the first-timers, one in five of the dentists, volunteers and tripartite staff registered for this annual springtime conference. "And welcome to all of you back for another WLC. We need your experience."
The ADA president invited professional leadership at every level of government "to see that our issues are handled as you choose." He then turned to Dr. Paul Gosar, a Flagstaff, Ariz., general practice dentist and vice chair of ADA's Council on Government Affairs, who announced his own campaign for leadership as a member of the United States Congress.
Dr. Gosar said he chose the Washington Leadership Conference to announce his candidacy for election from Arizona's first congressional district, which he said is the nation's 10th largest in size. First-term Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) is the incumbent. Dr. Gosar said he will run as a Republican.
"Paul will be attending our first ever ADPAC campaign school June 11-13 here in DC along with eight other ADA dentists who are seeking to serve in public service at the local, state and national levels," Dr. Roger Triftshauser, American Dental Political Action Committee chair, told WLC attendees. The Art of Political Campaigning seminars are sponsored by Politics Magazine according to the politicsmagazine.com Web site.
There are two dentists currently serving in Congress, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), one of the WLC speakers, and Rep. John Linder (R-Ga.).
