New ADA standards and report available
First standards for oral hygiene products approved by committee
Posted July 1, 2009

Seven new standards and one new technical report from the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products have been approved and are now available from the ADA. They include the first three standards for oral hygiene products approved by the SCDP.

ANSI/ADA Specification No. 119 for Manual Toothbrushes describes requirements and test methods for the physical properties of manual toothbrushes in order to promote the safety of these products for their intended use. Also specified is a test method for determining the resistance of the tufted portion of manual toothbrushes to deflection.

ANSI/ADA Specification No. 125 for Manual Interdental Brushes presents requirements and test methods for performance criteria for manual interdental brushes with a round cross-section of the brush head.

ANSI/ADA Specification No. 120 for Powered Toothbrushes defines requirements and test methods for the physical properties of powered toothbrushes in order to promote the safety of these products for their intended use.

ADA Technical Report No. 110 for Standard Procedures for the Assessment of Laser-induced Effects on Oral Hard and Soft Tissue is the first guideline issued by the SCDP on laser dentistry. The document addresses the issues related to laser interaction with hard and soft tissue. Guidelines and methodologies are given which will provide data of enough quality and quantity to critically assess the effects of lasers on hard and soft tissue.

ANSI/ADA Specification No. 126 for Casting Investments and Refractory Die Materials is applicable to dental casting, brazing and refractory investments and refractory die materials, regardless of the nature of the binding system or the particular application. This specification classifies investments into types according to their intended uses and classes according to the recommended burn-out procedure. It consolidates and replaces five ANSI/ADA specifications: ANSI/ADA Specification No. 2 for Gypsum-bonded Casting Investment for Dental Gold Alloy; ANSI/ADA Specification No. 42 for Phosphate-bonded Investments; ANSI/ADA Specification No. 91 for Ethyl Silicate Investments; ANSI/ADA Specification No. 92 for Refractory Die Materials; and ANSI/ADA Specification No. 93 for Soldering Investments.

The revision of ANSI/ADA Specification No. 71 for Root Canal Filling Condensers (Pluggers and Spreaders) presents requirements and test methods for root canal instruments for finger, hand or mechanical operation used to compact root canal filling materials. The specification has been updated to include mechanical, rotational or impacting instruments.

The revision of ANSI/ADA Specification No. 53 for Polymer-based Crown and Bridge Materials covers these materials as used for laboratory-fabricated permanent facings or anterior crowns which may or may not be attached to a metal substructure. This specification also applies to polymer-based crown and bridge materials for which the manufacturer claims adhesion to the metal substructure without macromechanical retention, such as beads or wires.

The revision of ANSI/ADA Specification No. 15 for Artificial Teeth for Dental Prostheses defines the classification, requirements, and test methods for synthetic polymer and ceramic teeth that are manufactured for use in prostheses used in dentistry.

Purchasers of the oral hygiene standards will receive a 10 percent discount when all three standards are purchased as a set.
