Sept. 21-23 tobacco summit set
Posted July 16, 2009

Madison, Wis.—The 5th National Summit on Smokeless and Spit Tobacco will convene at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center here Sept. 21-23.

The theme will be New Products, New Challenges and a New Generation of Advocacy. The summit is designed for a wide range of participants, from oral health care professionals and researchers to tobacco prevention and control staff, policymakers, school administrators and community advocates. The summit will also feature a track of sessions designed especially for students and offer an evening reception with salsa music and dance lessons.

The keynote speaker is Jack Henningfild, Ph.D., a researcher well known for his work with tobacco and nicotine addiction. Other nationally recognized experts will cover topics that include cessation, taxation, new products, priority populations, candy flavored tobacco and more.

The summit is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Office of Continuing Education and Extension. Co-sponsors include Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Control Program, American Legacy Foundation, American Cancer Society Midwest Division, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, American Dental Association, West Virginia Division of Tobacco Prevention, Wyoming Department of Health, Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program, Tobacco Free Nebraska, ETR Associates, FACT (Fighting Against Corporate Tobacco) and Wisconsin Dental Association.

The Monona Terrace, originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright shortly before his death in 1959, opened in 1997 and features his design for the building's exterior. The interior was redesigned to house state-of-the-art exhibition, meeting and public space on the shores of Lake Monona. Located in the heart of the cultural and entertainment district, the Monona Terrace is within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, museums and hotels.
