Cosmetic/Restorative Care Guidelines

Manuscript Format and Style

Basic requirements. Manuscripts should be limited to 10 double-spaced pages, not including references and illustrations.

Structured Abstract. Authors also should provide a separate abstract of the article, no more than 100 words in length and focusing on the clinical implications and practical utility of the technique or material being described. The abstract should include the following segments: Background (a summary of the general topic and purpose of the article); Case Description (the condition of a patient, the treatment undertaken and the outcome); Clinical Implications (what the treatment outcomes imply for clinical practice).

Writing Style. Writing style should be clear and concise, using active voice. As the foundation for its style, JADA uses "The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual." The style for references and scientific information is drawn from the most recent edition of the "American Medical Association Manual of Style." Headlines should be brief and are subject to change by the editors. Short subheads should be used to help guide the reader through the article.

References. All published references should be cited in the text and numbered consecutively. No references should be cited in the abstract. Each reference should be cited only once; on subsequent citations, the original number is used. For a more detailed description of JADA's style for references, consult The Journal's basic "Guidelines for Authors."

Illustrations

Because photography is an integral part of most cosmetic/restorative care articles, JADA's usual limits on the number of photographs allowed per article do not apply to this section.

Authors are invited to provide sufficient numbers of high-quality photographs to present their material comprehensively, provided that there is an appropriate ratio of text to photographs: the length of the manuscript must be sufficient to support placement of photographs within the text. As a rule of thumb, assume an outside limit of three photographs per manuscript page.

In addition to photographs, other illustrations — charts, graphs and tables — may be used to augment, but not repeat, the text. The number of such illustrations allowed will be judged in the context of the total volume of illustrations provided. The editor and publisher reserve the right to limit the number of illustrations as necessary. JADA cannot accept original histologic slides and radiographs. However, The Journal will accept prints, transparencies or digital files of radiographs, magnetic resonance images and magnetic resonance angiograms.

Review Process

Articles in JADA are subject to a confidential review for appropriateness and scientific accuracy. This review is overseen by the JADA editor, working in consultation with an expert panel recruited exclusively for the purpose of reviewing submissions for the Cosmetic & Restorative Care section. Reviews by the panel are a single-blinded process; reviewers know the identity of the author(s), but authors do not know the identity of reviewers.

Once the review process is completed, the editor makes the final decision about the manuscript's disposition: accept, accept with minor revision, revise and resubmit, reject.

Editorial Assistance

JADA reserves the right to edit manuscripts to ensure conciseness, clarity and stylistic consistency to fit articles to available space. After accepted articles are edited, they are returned to the authors for review and comment before publication.

Beyond the standard editing process, JADA's editorial staff also is available to work with authors needing assistance in preparing their manuscripts. For editorial assistance, contact JADA Editorial Director Lisbeth Maxwell at ADA Headquarters, Ext. 2784; e-mail .
