The growing debate over the safety of silver-colored fillings, known as dental amalgam, pits science against emotion, and consumers are caught in the crossfire, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).

A new survey indicates one in four people have heard that silver-colored fillings (amalgam) are “bad for you” or could cause health problems, despite assurances from major U.S. health agencies that this is not the case. According to the findings, patients who ask about the safety of amalgam during their dental visits are more likely to choose the silver-colored filling than those who do not ask.

New guidelines from the American Dental Association (ADA) encourage dentists to recycle amalgam and x-ray waste generated during dental procedures. “Dentists want to do their part for the environment we all share,” states James B. Bramson, D.D.S., ADA executive director. “By implementing these guidelines, dentists will continue to make their offices more environmentally friendly.”

This report of the Council on Scientific Affairs reviews and discusses recent studies concerning the safety of dental amalgam, with an emphasis on studies that have been published since the 1993 review of dental amalgam by the U.S. Public Health Service Committee to Coordinate Environmental Health and Related Programs. The Council concludes that, based on currently available scientific information, amalgam continues to be a safe and effective restorative material.
