Annual survey of all predoctoral dental education programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Reports in the four-part series include general program information, student and graduate data, curriculum, and financial management of dental schools in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Report 1: Academic Programs, Enrollment and Graduates
Provides national and program-level survey year information on academic programs, admission requirements, financial assistance, instruction methods, patient care, and support personnel at U.S. dental schools. Also features trends in applications, first-year and total enrollment, first-year repeaters, and enrollment and graduates by gender and race/ethnicity. Some tables include data for dental schools in Canada.
Report 2: Tuition, Admission and Attrition
Includes school-level and national data (both single-year and trend) on resident and non-resident tuition, general fees and other fixed costs associated with instruments, textbooks, and health services. Also provides data on admissions policies of dental schools in the U.S. and Canada, number of applications, academic qualifications of first-year students, criteria employed in the admissions process, advanced placement and number of international dental school graduates, distribution of first-year students according to citizenship, and student attrition and withdrawal information.
Report 3: Finances
Provides financial information from the previous fiscal year from accredited U.S. dental schools. Revenue and expenditures are presented by individual category and in total. Includes ratios of revenue and expenditures per student and comparisons between public and private schools. Trend data is provided for select revenue and expense categories. School-level data is presented anonymously.
Report 4: Curriculum
The curriculum survey was updated in the 2014-15 school year to provide dental schools with an internal benchmarking tool that monitors compliance to CODA standards and prepares programs for future site visits. The survey is currently conducted every other year. The revised report features national-level survey year data divided into the following sections:
- Instructional methods and assessments of competency used to demonstrate compliance with select CODA Standards
- Evaluation methods used to generate evidence of compliance with CODA Standards on the learning environment
- Methods used to integrate instruction in biomedical and behavioral sciences with instruction in the clinical sciences, as described in the document "Foundation Knowledge for the General Dentist,” prepared by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) Committee on the Integrated Examination (CIE)
- Descriptions of curriculum format, content and innovations
- Type of program sites used for rendering care, by patient type and class year
- Clock hours of instruction by category and class year
The previous version of the curriculum report, last published for 2010-11, summarized clock hours of instruction in biomedical sciences; dental/clinical sciences; and behavioral, social, information, and research sciences in U.S. dental schools by curriculum type and major teaching area.
