Admission Tests and Dental Exams
The Department of Testing Services (DTS) is a shared service of the American Dental Association that provides professional psychometric and test development services for high stakes testing programs in dentistry and healthcare. DTS develops and implements important licensure and admission testing programs under the purview of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), the American Dental Association (ADA) Board of Trustees, the ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL), and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). With respect to each examination program, the corresponding examination governing body establishes policies and procedures to be implemented by the professional staff within DTS.
The JCNDE oversees the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE Part I and Part II) and the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE). The Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) is currently under development by the JCNDE.
During its development, the Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE) is being overseen by the ADA Board of Trustees through its DLOSCE Steering Committee.
CDEL oversees the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and the Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) for admission into dental and advanced dental education programs, respectively.
ASCO oversees the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) for admission into optometry education programs.
Each of the examination programs indicated above relies heavily on dedicated teams of highly qualified volunteers who provide the necessary content expertise to help ensure that each examination is valid and reliable, in accordance with professional standards. These volunteer Test Constructors develop test questions that are clear, accurate, and support the purpose of the corresponding testing program. On behalf of the governing bodies indicated above, DTS seeks qualified subject matter experts who are willing to serve as Test Constructors.
