The ADA must change the declining national market share trend. In order to do so, the ADA will have to realign its focus, relevance and actions to resonate not only with new generational cohorts (millennials and generation Y), but also the inherent diversity within them. This session will utilize relevant education, research and discussion to identify recommendations for transformative change. Attendees will engage in interactive discussions that explore the following questions:
- How are the generational differences playing out in your lives, your practices and your leadership roles?
- How are the generational differences playing out in the ADA (national, state and local)?
- What are some ways the ADA and its leadership can successfully execute against generational differences?
The session will end with opportunities to make recommendations for member growth across those newest to the profession, particularly within ADA’s lagging segments: women, racially/ethnically diverse and dentists practicing in an employee setting.
Dr. Steve Shepard, MBA, PhD
Founder, Shepard Communications Group
Dr. Steve Shepard has a wide range of experiences and degrees – including a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Romance Philology, a Masters in International Business, and a PhD from the Da Vinci Institute in Rivonia, South Africa. He formed his own company, Shepard Communications Group in 2000. Dr. Shepard specializes in international technical strategy, with an emphasis on the social, geopolitical, economic, and competitive implications of technological change. He also brings a wealth of generational insights, including the impact of generational disparity on an organization’s relevance and growth. He has worked in more than 90 countries, serving many different industries, including dentistry.
April Kates-Ellison, MS, CAE
ADA Vice President, Member & Client Services
April Kates-Ellison is Vice President of Member and Client Services. Ms. Kates-Ellison oversees the American Dental Association’s member and client services, driving member growth strategies that leverage the collective ADA System (national, state and local) to increase membership and drive revenue. Her focus centers on growing membership, especially in key member segments, while ensuring a commitment to both diversity and inclusion. She is also responsible for delivering a portfolio of service offerings to state and local ADA societies and dental schools.
Ms. Kates-Ellison holds a Master of Science in Public Service Management from DePaul University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Illinois. In addition, she holds the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential through the American Society of Association Executives. She is a recipient of the Workforce Diversity Scholar Leadership Program through Association Forum of Chicagoland and also a recipient of the Women of Excellence Award through the Chicago Defender.
ADA Chief Marketing & Communications Officer
Stephanie Moritz is a transformational leader, catalyst, growth accelerator, organization and team energizer, coach and speaker. Ms. Moritz currently is Chief Marketing and Communications Officer of the American Dental Association and is responsible for leading the transformation of ADA Communications, Membership Marketing, Research and Intelligence, Digital Experience, Creative Services and Public Affairs. Under her leadership, the ADA has changed the way it engages its members, prospective members, influencers and the public. She has grown the ADA brand through the implementation of Design Thinking, insights and data-driven campaigns, member and prospective member panels, new digital member experience, engaging storytelling, and a new ADA Vision and Masterbrand strategy.
Ms. Moritz was recognized as one of the Founding members of Chief, PRNews’ 2019 Top Women in Healthcare and Top Women in PR; 2018 Golden Bridge Awards Gold Category Winner: Female Professional of the Year and Marketing Executive of the Year; Media Post’s Online Marketing All Stars in 2014 and one of PR Week’s “40 Under 40.” Prior to joining ConAgra Foods, she led Communications and Product Publicity for The Hershey Company and Jim Beam Brands. Ms. Moritz also held marketing and communications positions at EBS/Porter Novelli Convergence Group, Illinois House of Representatives and Walt Disney Attractions, Inc.

Ashleigh Shelby Rosette, Ph.D. is one of the foremost leading scholars on research that resides at the intersection of leadership, gender, and race. She is Senior Associate Dean and Professor of Management and Organizations at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Rosette is an accomplished leadership, diversity, and negotiations scholar and one of the most decorated teachers in the history of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Her research has been featured in Forbes, CNN, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, Business Week, the Financial Times, USA Today, Huffington Post, and National Public Radio.
She was ranked as one of the Fifty Most Influential Business Professors by mbarankings.net, one of the Favorite Professors among MBAs by Poet & Quants, and is the recipient of the PhD Project’s Trailblazer Award. She provides consulting services on topics such as leadership, diversity, decision-making, and negotiations to an array of clients in varied industries.
She received her Bachelor in Business Administration degree and Master in Professional Accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She received her Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Prior to her career in academia she worked as a CPA.

The ABCs of GenZ – Session #3
Tracy Hollenbach, ADA Senior Manager, Office of Student Affairs
These digital natives are the most ethnically and racially diverse generation in history. Research reveals that this generation's values and behaviors center around their search for truth. They value individual expression and will mobilize themselves for a variety of causes. With 93% of dental students belonging to this generation, it's critical to gain a better understanding of what they need and how they want it. In this session, you’ll learn what drives them and to how to remain relevant to this generation.
Tracy E. Hollenbach
Senior Manager, ADA Office of Student Affairs
Tracy has worked in various capacities at the ADA since 1994. She initially worked with dental students at the inception of the ADA Office of Student Affairs in 1994. From 2009-2019 she worked in Integrated Marketing and Communications Division developing strategies and outreach initiatives to support programs and services association-wide. Tracy has come full circle, once again working in the ADA Office of Student Affairs to support dental students and dental schools. The Office of Student Affairs’ team works to identify and implement opportunities that strengthen ADA’s relationship with dental students, to create a mutually beneficial long-term connection with organized dentistry.
