Spotlight: North Texas Dental Society’s Tour de Fourth Event

On a typical hot July evening in Dallas, 144 TAMU-Baylor College of Dentistry students were the guests of North Texas Dental Society (4th District) for the inaugural “Tour de Fourth,” a dinner and glimpse behind-the-scenes at several successful area dental practices. Transportation from the dental school to the offices was via nine Hummer limousines, which added another layer of fun to the event.

The Tour de Fourth – quite literally a tour of Fourth District – was conceived by the NTDS Recruitment and Retention Committee as an outreach event to allow D3, D4, and graduate dental students to make connections with dentists in the community, have exposure to sponsoring vendors, and see the importance of organized dentistry in their post-graduate plans. Each limousine was staffed with a dental society member, including several young dentists, who were in charge of hospitality, introductions, and making sure the event stayed on time and on course. In all, more than 25 members of North Texas Dental Society volunteered their time to make the event a success.

At the nine participating dental offices, the dentist/owner of each practice led the students on a tour of the office, sharing “pearls of wisdom” about not only the nuts and bolts of setting up a practice, but also the importance of integrity, quality support staff, continuing education and participating in organized dentistry. The students were actively engaged by the small group setting and asked some great questions. Each group of students visited three offices in order to look into variety of practice modalities. The various offices included specialty care, dental imaging and large group practices.

The event was financed in part by an ADA MPG Grant and the remainder was underwritten by nine different sponsors. They included dental suppliers, manufacturers, CPAs, a construction firm, a bank and an attorney. As part of their sponsorship, these companies each had a representative attending the event, who rode along in a limo and connected with the dental students. Due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback from all involved, NTDS plans to make the Tour de Fourth an annual event.

ADA announces exclusive student loan refinancing offer with DRB

ADA’s exclusive deal with DRB (Darien Rowayton Bank), an industry leader in debt consolidation, allows ADA member dentists the opportunity to refinance existing federal and private undergraduate and graduate school loans at a lower interest rate to save tens of thousands of dollars, on average. Qualifying members can refinance existing federal and private undergraduate and graduate school loans at a 0.25% lower rate than DRB’s already low rates. Stay tuned for a promotional toolkit available via the dental society portal. Learn more about the program.

2015 Member Value and Loyalty Survey Reports Are Available in ADA Connect

Customized state reports for the 2015 Member Value and Loyalty research are now available in ADA Connect. These 2015 reports provide a comparative analysis to results from 2012, the last time this research was done.

National questions were consistent for all recipients, and state dental societies had the opportunity either to customize responses to specific questions or to administer the survey using the standard questions. In 2015, a total of 47 state dental societies customized the survey compared to 39 in 2012. State-specific questions covered benefits, publications, annual meeting, advocacy, public communications, website and general perceptions.  Please speak with your outreach manager about how to use this data most effectively within your dental society.

 New ADA Success Toolkit

State and local dental societies can use ADA Success to enhance their dental student outreach efforts. A toolkit, developed to help dental societies get involved in and leverage ADA Success, is now available.  The toolkit includes newsletter blurbs, social media posts, and tips and guidelines for scheduling or hosting an ADA Success program. To access the toolkit and view the current ADA Success schedule, visit the Office of Student Affairs community on ADA Connect or contact Isabella Horning in the ADA Office of Student Affairs at
