Members of the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards are selected in accordance with the Rules of the National Commission and the Constitution and Bylaws of the American Dental Association. The current members are listed below.

Dr. James Boyle, (AAOMS), Chair
Dr. James M Boyle III practices Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in York, PA. Dr Boyle is a graduate of Northwestern University Dental School and completed his residency and research in OMS at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He is a diplomats of the American Board of OMS and a fellow in AAOMS and International College of Dentists. He has served in a number of leadership roles in dentistry including President of the Pennsylvania Society of OMS, President of the Pennsylvania Dental Association, Chair and Vice Chair of the ADA Council of Education and Licensure and Chair of ADA CERP.
Dr. Alan Friedel, (ADA), Vice-Chair
Dr. Alan E. Friedel is in the private practice of General Dentist in the Miami, Florida community. He has served the ADA in many capacities including Chairman of the Code Revision Committee (now the Code Maintenance Committee) for six consecutive years, Chairman of the Council on Dental Benefit Programs, Committee on Elder- Care, Electronic Health Record Work Group, Chairman ADA BOT Committee to Review CRC. Alan served in the ADA House of delegates for 16 years, including service on five reference committees, two as Chairman. He is past President of the Florida Dental Association. Dr. Friedel was adjunct faculty at the University of Florida Hialeah Clinic, was an advisor to the McFatter Technical School- Laboratory Technician Training program and was President of the Broward Dental Research Clinic.
Dr. Wayne Aldredge, (AAP)
Dr. Wayne A. Aldredge is in private practice in Holmdel, NJ. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. He obtained his Dental Degree from Rutgers Dental School. He then completed an Advanced Educational Program in General Dentistry and served in the U.S. Army as a dentist at West Point, NY. He completed his specialty training in Periodontology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has served in leadership roles in numerous dental professional organizations at the state, regional and national levels and as President of the American Academy of Periodontology, Northeastern Society of Periodontist, and the New Jersey Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.
Dr. Don Altman, (AAPHD)
Dr. Don Altman is the Dean of the College of Graduate Health Studies at A.T. Still University in Mesa, AZ. He served as President of the Arizona State Board Dental Examiners, the Arizona Public Health Association, and The American Board of Dental Public Health. He also served on the Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Review Team and as a Site Visitor (public health). He graduated from the University of Texas Dental Branch (DDS) in 1983. He completed his Master of Public Health degree at the University of Texas School of Public Health in 1989 and became Board Certified in Dental Public Health in 1999.
Dr. Joseph Battaglia, (ADA)
Dr. Joseph Battaglia is a dentist in private practice in Wayne, N.J. He holds an Associate Clinical Professor faculty appointment in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. He currently is Chair, AGD Legislative and Government Affairs Council, Chair American Association of Dental Boards East Caucus, and NJ State Board of Dentistry representative to Commission on Dental Competency Assessment's House of Delegates. He previously served as Chair, AGD Dental Practice Council, a member of the NJ State Board of Dentistry and President, NJ AGD. He holds a MS in Biochemistry from FDU School of Dentistry and a DMD from UMDNJ inducted as an alumni member in OKU. He completed a General Practice Residency at Hackensack University Medical Center and has received fellowships in the Academy of General Dentistry, the Academy of Dentistry International, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
Dr. James Benz, (ADA)
Dr. James D. Benz is currently the Chair of the Department of Dentistry, GPR Program Director, maintains a faculty general dental position, serves on multiple hospital committees and is past director of Special Patient Dental Care all at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago, IL. He is a faculty member of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, University of Illinois—College of Dentistry, Chicago, and is a member of the CDS, ISDS, ADA, SCDA and ADEA. Dr. Benz served as branch president in the CDS, as an ISDS Trustee, is currently serving on the ISDS Governmental Affairs Committee and is an 8th District ADA Delegate. He was a partner for 33 years in a general dental practice in Skokie, IL and is a graduate of UIC-COD and the GPR Program at AIMMC.
Dr. Renee Broughten, (Public Member)
Dr. Renee Broughten is a chiropractor with a PhD in Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development. She is currently a professor in the Department of Interprofessional Education, at St. Catherine University, in St. Paul MN, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate health care students about evidence-based practice and healthcare teams. Prior to serving as the public/consumer Commissioner for the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards, she was a public member on the Pediatric Review Committee, for the Commission on Dental Education (2011-2015).
Dr. Anthony Carroccia, (ADA)
Dr. Anthony Carroccia is a graduate of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. He is a veteran of the US Army before starting his own practice in Clarksville, TN. Dr. Carroccia is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), a Diplomat of the American Board of General Dentistry, where he also serves as a Director on their Board of Directors and is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists. He is a Trustee on the Tennessee Dental Association's Board of Trustees and also serves as the current TN-AGD President. Dr. Carroccia also is on the AGD's Fellowship Exam Development Committee, ADA's NBDE Part II/ADAT Construction Team and teaches state approved certification courses for RDAs and RDHs.
Dr. Ralph Cooley, (ADA)
Dr. Ralph A. Cooley, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Services at U.T. School of Dentistry in Houston, was in private practice in Conroe, Texas before serving in this capacity. Dr. Cooley is a past president of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry and served on the national AGD Board of Directors, the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Benefit Programs, and the ADA's Code Revision Committee. Currently, he is a delegate to the Texas Dental Association House of Delegates, the AGD House, and the ADA House. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Dental Quality Alliance, the Code Maintenance Committee, and the AGD’s Dental Practice Council.
Dr. Steven Ganzberg (ASDA)
Dr. Steven Ganzberg is Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at the UCLA School of Dentistry and a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He taught at The Ohio State University medical and dental schools for 17 years before coming to UCLA. Dr. Ganzberg is a past president of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a past editor of Anesthesia Progress, the leading English language journal devoted to anesthesiology for dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is also active clinically as Director of Anesthesiology for the Century City Outpatient Surgery Center, a Joint Commission accredited surgery center focusing on oral, maxillofacial and facial plastic surgery. He has published over 70 original research articles and book chapters in the field.
Dr. Anita Gohel, (AAOMR)
Dr. Anita Gohel is a Clinical Professor and Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry. She is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology. Dr. Gohel received her BDS from Calcutta University in India, a Ph.D in Oral Biology and a certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from the University of Connecticut. She is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. She has served in various leadership roles in American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology. She has served as a Director and President of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology. She is a member for the CODA Review Committee on Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Education.
Dr. Denise Hering, (ADA)
Dr. Denise Hering is a dentist in private practice in Reynoldsburg, OH and an Assistant Professor in the restorative department of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. She is a Registered Parliamentarian and is currently serving as Speaker of the House for the Ohio Dental Association. A 1985 graduate of OSU, she is a proud member of the ADA, the ODA, and is a past president of the Columbus Dental Society. She is a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists for which she is the current Vice-Regent for District 7.
Dr. Michaell A. Huber (AAOM)
Dr. Michaell A. Huber is a 1980 graduate from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, San Antonio, Texas. Following graduation he embarked upon 22 year career serving in United States Navy Dental Corps. He received a Certificate in Oral Medicine from the National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, Maryland in 1988 and is diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine. From 1996-1998, he served as Chairman, Department of Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Radiology and Director, Graduate Program in Oral Medicine, National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, Maryland and as Specialty Leader for Oral Medicine to the Surgeon General of the United States Navy, Washington, DC. In 2002 Dr. Huber returned to his alma mater and is a tenured professor teaching both pre-doctoral and graduate dental students. In 2019 he was awarded the UT System Regents Outstanding Teaching Award. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine.
Dr. William T. Johnson, (AAE)
Dr. William T. Johnson is a 1975 graduate from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Following graduation he served in the United States Army as a General Dental Officer in Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Dr. Johnson received his Certificate of Specialization in Endodontics and Master of Science Degree from the University of Iowa in 1981. Dr. Johnson has served as Department Chair at University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry and University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He has been President of the American Association of Endodontists (2012) and American Board of Endodontics (1999 and 2000), Trustee for the American Association of Endodontics from 2009 to 2013, member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Fellow in the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Johnson has also served as Secretary, Program Chair, Chair of the Endodontic Section of the American Dental Education Association (American Association of Dental Schools) from 1989-1992 and was Councilor for the section from 2000-2003 and served his four years (2003-2007) on the ADEA Council of Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs representing the American Association of Endodontists.
Dr. Gary Klasser, (AAOP)
Dr. Gary D. Klasser obtained his dental degree from the University of Manitoba (Canada) in 1980. Over the next 22 years, he enjoyed the practice of general dentistry from both a public health and private practice perspective until he returned to graduate studies in 2002. In 2004, he completed his training and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Certificate in Orofacial Pain. In 2005, he completed a fellowship in Oral Medicine/Oral Oncology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). From 2005 – 2011, he was an Assistant Professor and Director of the Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain clinic at the College of Dentistry in the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Louisiana State University, School of Dentistry as well as the Director of the LSU Orofacial Pain Continuum. Dr. Klasser has published numerous peer reviewed scientific articles while contributing many chapters to various textbooks. He also serves as an associate editor or as an editorial reviewer for a number of journals. He is also co-editor of several textbooks related to oral and facial pain and is a Past-President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.
Dr. Roger Kiesling, (ADA)
Dr. Roger Kiesling is a 1979 honors graduate of the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He is a partner of Associated Dental Care of Helena, Montana. He was President of the Montana Dental Association 1989-1990. He was the ADA Eleventh District Trustee from 2010-2014. Dr. Kiesling served on the ADA ADABEI Board from 2011-2014. He currently serves as Vice President of Finance for the ADA Foundation. He is a Fellow of the ACD, ICD, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the AGD. Dr. Kiesling has served on the ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure, the ADA Council on Dental Practice, and the ADA Commission on the Young Professional. He has served on numerous ADA Task Forces examining issues related to CODA, the Future of Dentistry report in 1999-2000, and Specialty Recognition.
Dr. Andrew Kwasny, (AAO)
Dr. Andrew J. Kwasny has been in the practice of Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Orthopedics for over 30 years in Erie, Pennsylvania. He recently completed his term as the ADA Third District Trustee. In 2017, Dr. Kwasny received the Distinguished Service Award from the Pennsylvania Dental Association and was recognized by the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine as its Distinguished Alumnus. He is a Past-President of the Pennsylvania Dental Association and was appointed by the American Association of Orthodontists as its representative to the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards.
Dr. Brian McAllister, (ADA)
Dr Brian McAllister graduated with honors from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1993. He then completed a General Practice Residency at Wilmington Hospital, Wilmington, DE in 1994 and opened a solo practice in 1995 in Middletown, DE where he’s maintained a private practice for the past 24 years. Dr. McAllister served the Delaware State Dental Society as the State’s President 2004 -2005, Continuing Education Chair 2005-2008, and Legislative Chair 2005-2013. He was appointed to the State Dental Board in 2013 and was elected as the State Board President 2015-2017. He served as the President of the Delaware AGD 2001-2003 and an AGD Delegate for Region V 2001-2003. He is a Fellow of ICD, Pierre Fauchard Academy and the AGD. Currently Dr. McAllister is on the attending staff for the Dental Residency Program at Christiana Care Hospital and council member of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.
Dr. Edward H. Moody, Jr., (AAPD)
Dr. Edward H. Moody, Jr. is in private practice in Morristown, Tennessee. He received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee and completed his specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Moody has served in leadership roles at the state, regional, and national level as a member of the Tennessee Board of Dentistry and as President of the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Susan Muller, (AAOMP)
Dr. Susan Muller retired from Emory University October 2013 and is Professor Emeritus and is currently in private practice with Atlanta Oral Pathology. She held joint appointments in the Department of Pathology, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and the Winship Cancer Institute beginning in 1995. Dr. Muller is Past President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Past President of the North American Society of Head and Neck and Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Muller was been Editor-in-Chief of Head and Neck Pathology from 2008-2019. Dr. Muller enjoys lecturing on Oral Pathology and has lectured throughout the world. She also published on her favorite topics and has more than 200 publications.
Dr. Charles H. Norman, (ADA)
Dr. Charles H. Norman a practicing dentist is Greensboro, North Carolina since 1977 is a Past President of the American Dental Association. Prior to his election and service as President of the ADA, Dr. Norman held leadership positions in multiple levels of organized dentistry. He is a fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Norman received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina. He also served on its Foundation Board, which raises funds for improvements at the school as well as financing student and faculty scholarships and endowments. He was honored by the School of Dentistry for his commitment to Dental Education and Organized Dentistry with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Dr. Prabu Raman, (ADA)
Dr. Prabu Raman is a general dentist from Kansas City, Missouri. His private practice focuses exclusively on: Cranio Cervical Mandibular Dysfunction / Temporo Mandibular Dysfunction, Complex Aesthetic restorative Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine / Oral Appliance therapy.
Dr. Raman serves as an active member of the ADA House of Delegates and Dental Licensure Objective Standardized Clinical Examination steering committee of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. He has served on the Council on Dental Education and Licensure, as Chair of ADA Recognition of Dental Specialties and Interest Areas in General Dentistry Committee and on the Task force on Recognition of Dental Specialties and advocated for the bylaw change at the ADA HOD to create the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards.
Dr. Raman has served as President of the Missouri Dental Association and Greater Kansas City Dental Society. He received his D.D.S. degree from University of Missouri- Kansas City, B.S. Radiology Technology from William Jewell College and B.Sc. Physics from University of Madras.
Dr. Frank J. Tuminelli, (ACP)
Dr. Frank J Tuminelli is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and the Program Director of Advanced Prosthodontics at the Manhattan Veterans Administration He is Past President of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) and The Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics. Dr Tuminelli is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Dental Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He lectures nationally, and has authored / coauthored multiple scientific papers. Dr Tuminelli is the recipient of the 2017 Educator of the year award from the ACP. He maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics in NYC and Long Island.
