The American Dental Association today released the second in a series of papers that examine the challenges and solutions to bringing good oral health to millions of Americans, including the growing population whose only possible source of dental care is the so-called oral health safety net.

Leading dental and pharmacy organizations are teaming up to promote oral health and raise public awareness of dry mouth, a side effect commonly caused by taking prescription and over-the-counter medications. More than 500 medications can contribute to oral dryness, including antihistamines (for allergy or asthma), antihypertensive medications (for blood pressure), decongestants, pain medications, diuretics and antidepressants. In its most severe form, dry mouth can lead to extensive tooth decay, mouth sores and oral infections, particularly among the elderly.

"We welcome the IOM’s ambitious 243-page report on ways to improve the nation’s oral health care delivery system, and we look forward to reviewing it in greater detail. Based on the report’s summary, we agree wholeheartedly with many of its recommendations. In fact, many of them reflect policies and programs that the ADA has had in place for years.

The American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) Board of Directors recently announced the appointment Gene R. Wurth, J.D., M.B.A., as the Foundation’s new executive director effective July 5. Wurth, 60, will manage the ADAF, the charitable arm of the American Dental Association, which secures contributions and provides grants for dental research, education, access to oral health care for underserved populations and assistance for dentists and their families in need.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recently selected Dr. Elizabeth Shapiro, 48, of Waterman, Ill., as the 2011-12 ADA Hillenbrand Fellow. The ADA awards the fellowship every other year to a dentist who has demonstrated strong leadership potential and the desire to transition from practicing dentistry to a nonclinical dental career in a health-related organization.

After enthusiastic feedback from its classes of students in 2009 and 2010, the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD) and The Forsyth Institute’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry, have announced they will hold an ADA/Forsyth EBD Training course for 2011.
