Lawmakers, charitable organizations and other stakeholders—some of them with very little experience in or understanding of oral health care—are proposing various models for so-called “midlevel” dental providers, non-dentists who would perform surgical/irreversible procedures. To date there has been no consensus on the specific prerequisites, scope or duration of educational program, or other critical attributes needed to define any academic model.

As part of an updated licensing agreement between the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Dental Association (ADA), dental codes will no longer be available through the downloadable Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) file available on the CMS Web site. CMS will continue sending the complete HCPCS code set, including the dental procedure codes, directly to entities that qualify under CMS guidelines.

The American Dental Association today commended the Institute of Medicine for its balanced report on the nation's oral health, delivered last week to the Health Resources and Services Administration. Advancing Oral Health in America deals mainly with the role of the Department of Health and Human Services in improving the nation's oral health and stresses the need for the agency to partner with multiple stakeholders, including those in the private sector.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the Oral Cancer Foundation (OCF) encourage people to take part in Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April by visiting a dentist for a free oral cancer screening. So far, more than 1,250 sites across the nation have registered their screening events with the OCF.
