Clarification on letter in December 2011 issue of JADA

January 09, 2012

A letter that appeared in the December 2011 issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association stated that, as of Jan. 1. 2012, dentists would be required to display an automated external defibrillator (AED) in their office. The letter writer was referring to the requirement in his home state—New York—and not the entire nation. Many states have laws and regulations that promote the use of AEDs in schools and other facilities, but New York is one of only a few states that mandate their use in dental offices. Dentists are advised to check with their state dental association for the requirements in their area.
