Media tour spotlights Americans' oral health IQ

Spanish-speaking media outlets accounted for half the interviews performed during the ADA’s June 28 satellite media tour.

The media tour is part of the kickoff of, the ADA’s new consumer website that debuted June 25. With timely and credible oral health information on prevention, care and treatment; information organized by life stages; the ADA Find-a-Dentist feature; and videos, is designed to be the definitive source of consumer oral health information.

A key goal of the satellite media tour was to improve consumers’ knowledge of oral health, something that a recent ADA survey found to be lacking.

“A consumer survey was conducted by the ADA and what we learned is that most Americans do not know much about their oral health,” ADA Consumer Advisor Maria Lopez Howell told WXBR Radio in Boston during the media tour.

Dr. Howell answered questions on first dental visits, frequency of brushing and flossing, fluoride use, bad breath, dental visits, nutrition and oral health, and encouraged listeners to visit the new website.

“There’s a quiz on, 'Brush Up on Your Dental IQ,’ “ said Dr. Howell. “We encourage you to take the quiz and find out what you know about your oral health, but more importantly, what you don’t know.”

With one click, is available in Spanish translation, making it one of the most ambitious Spanish translation initiatives the ADA has undertaken.

Dr. Howell, who narrates many videos, gave 27 interviews with media outlets across the country during the June 28 media tour. Half included Spanish-speaking media outlets such as Univision New York, which draws the largest Spanish-speaking audience in the country.
