ADA New Dentist Committee announces 2012 award winners

March 19, 2012

By Karen Fox, ADA News staff

Several new dentists and society committees are the recipients of the ADA New Dentist Committee’s 2012 awards for excellence in programming that supports dentists who have graduated from dental school less than 10 years ago.

Dr. Adams

The committee announced the following awards earlier this month:

• Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Leadership—Dr. C. Brad Adams of the North Carolina Dental Society. As the chair of the NCDS Committee on the New Dentist, Dr. Adams organized and led a number of well-attended and popular programs for students and new dentists in North Carolina, including the society’s Annual Session Mentor Reception, the Transitions Program at the dental school and the NCDS Mentor Program. In 2011, Dr. Adams planned the first Annual New Dentist Seminar, a continuing education event for members. “The event was unbelievably successful, with 200 participants, of whom 50 were dental students at UNC and others new dentists from across the state,” wrote Kim Roberson, NCDS membership outreach coordinator, in nomination papers.

Dr. Bennett

• Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Legislative Leadership—Dr. Ross A. Bennett of the Missouri Dental Association. The president of the Southeast Dental Society of Missouri, active MDA volunteer and contributor to ADPAC and MODentPAC, Dr. Bennett has been out of dental school for only five years but has already had a lasting impact on legislative affairs in Missouri. With his leadership, the Southeast Dental Society in 2011 lobbied the state to enforce ownership laws when a health cooperative announced plans to provide dental and other health services to its owner members in violation of state law. Those efforts resulted in the state re-examining the program and withdrawing funds. This year, Dr. Bennett is an ADA Action Team Leader—the contact person for a member of Congress within the ADPAC Grassroots Network.

Dr. White

• Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Leadership in Mentoring—Dr. David M. White of the Nevada Dental Association. As an adjunct faculty member at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine and a volunteer with the University of Nevada-Reno’s Pre-Dental Society, Dr. White urged the schools to create an early admit program to identify gifted students who would stay in Nevada to pursue their education. With the Pre-Dental Society, he has helped prepare many students for dental careers, but he’s taken that approach a step further by encouraging students to become leaders by immersing them in advocacy and community outreach, such as volunteering at community organizations and the school’s student-run clinic. Dr. White is also a nonpaid lobbyist for the Nevada Dental Association.

• New Dentist Committee Outstanding Program Award of Excellence—Colorado Dental Association New Dentist Committee. The committee earned the award for excellence with its “Surviving the First Ten Years” practice management lecture series. The quarterly study club provides guidance to new dentist members and a forum for vendors to share their areas of expertise, and facilitates dialogue and camaraderie among new dentist members—all with the goal of giving new dentists a foundation for the business of practicing dentistry. Past and future program topics include practice financing, fiscal responsibility, malpractice insurance, accounting, commercial real estate, embezzlement, case acceptance and employment law.

• Outstanding New Dentist Committee Award—The Arkansas State Dental Association New Dentist Committee is the first recipient of this new award. The committee is helping new dentists in Arkansas succeed through events like the Professional Development Workshop, leadership training, continuing education programs, community outreach, communications and the Everything You Need to Succeed packet, which compiles basic information a new dentist typically has to find on his/her own. Thanks to the committee’s efforts, ASDA is engaging new dentists and providing more member value at an earlier stage of a dentist’s career.
