Chairside Instructor expands options for patient education

May 07, 2012

By Jean Williams, ADA News staff

Dr. Albert Joaquin wanted to put a little extra byte into his patient education materials. He found just what he needed in the digital edition of the ADA’s popular Chairside Instructor: A Visual Guide to Case Presentations.

“I was looking for a way to incorporate the iPad into my practice, and I came across the digital edition of ADA’s Chairside Instructor,” said Dr. Joaquin, a general dentist in the Chicago area. “Since I was already familiar with the print edition, it was a simple way to transition to a more modern approach.”

The Chairside Instructor helps the dental team to dramatize anatomy, hygiene and oral health for patients through expert content and 225 vivid images. The digital edition expands the options that a busy practice has for sharing information to desktop, laptop and tablet computers, smartphones and other devices. So a dentist can whip out his iPad or Nook, for instance, to share the pages of the book.

Available in English or Spanish versions, the Chairside Instructor Digital Edition features rich images, allowing for zooming into before-and-after treatment images and detailed graphics and illustrations of moderate to severe early childhood caries, stages of periodontal disease, restorations, crowns, root canals, and orthodontic and cosmetic procedures.

“I have used it a number of times to introduce patients to various dental concepts like the stages of periodontal disease or the different choices for tooth replacement,” Dr. Joaquin said. “I will usually sit next to my patient to go over the pages that are relevant to their individual treatment. I think it helps them become more at ease with the treatment I recommend and allows them to ask questions in return. They seem to be more likely to accept treatment when they are visually connected to a procedure.”

The topic menu takes users directly to the content they want to access.

“If you are already using an iPad in the operatory, I think it is a nice addition to any dentist’s collection of education materials, especially for the price,” Dr. Joaquin said.

The Chairside Instructor Digital Edition (W013D) is $59.95 for members and is available from Use priority code 12209 and receive a 15 percent discount before July 6. To order or for additional product details, visit or call 1-800-947-4746.

According to recent customer surveys, ADA members report high satisfaction with their experiences placing orders via the revamped, which launched in January. While most ADA Catalog orders are placed by phone, a growing number of members are ordering from the e-catalog. Nearly a third of all ADA Catalog orders have been placed on in 2012 versus 17 percent in 2011.
