Government agencies post relief notices

Washington—The IRS extended through Nov. 7 the Oct. 31 deadline for tax returns and payments due primarily from business taxpayers and tax preparers in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy or otherwise impacted by the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States storm.

The IRS expects to grant additional filing and payment relief as qualifying disaster declarations are issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the notice IR-2012-82 said.

The relief is automatic, and no action is required by the hurricane-affected taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service said. Additional relief information will be posted on the Tax-Relief-in-Disaster-Situations page at

According to the FEMA website, affected individuals and businesses in eligible counties in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York can apply for disaster assistance. Additional resources include the U.S. Small Business Administration SBA website which offers “resources to help you rebuild your business or home “ and where individuals can also find federal assistance information and apply for disaster assistance.
