New oversight agency for ADA CERP proposed
June 17, 2013
The ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure and its Continuing Education Recognition Program Committee are considering a proposal to restructure ADA CERP as an agency separate from the council to better support the program's mission and minimize the potential for conflicts of interest.
View the proposal online. ADA CERP is currently administered by the CERP Committee, a standing committee of CDEL.
“The council believes separating CERP from CDEL would reflect best practices in continuing education accreditation, particularly with the increasing scrutiny of the federal government on continuing medical education and commercial conflicts of interest,” said CDEL chair Dr. Ron Venezie.
Under consideration is a proposal to establish a new Commission on Continuing Dental Education Accreditation under ADA Bylaws to oversee CERP.
“The ADA House of Delegates would approve the commission's rules and annual operating budget, consistent with the ADA's other commissions and a governing board comprised of representatives from the stakeholder groups currently represented on the CERP Committee would oversee the program,” said Dr. James Boyle, CERP committee chair.
The commission would have the authority to manage the program, approve CE providers and adopt recognition standards and policies, thus minimizing potential conflicts of interest with other ADA agencies, programs and priorities. The CERP program would continue to be funded through provider fees and the ADA.
The council's decision to explore a new model was made after reviewing the organizational structures of other accrediting agencies and analyzing CERP's current structure and CE environment.
CDEL has issued a call for comments from the communities of interest. Written comments on the proposal are requested by Sept. 1.
