New Orleans—They go above and beyond and challenge boundaries—all in service to dentistry. For this demonstration of loyalty, the ADA annually opens its ranks and extends an offer of honorary membership in the Association to exceptional individuals.

This year, the ADA Board of Trustees elected Bruce Bergstrom and Dr. Paul Warren for honorary membership. Mr. Bergstrom and Dr. Warren received their awards Nov. 4 at the ADA Annual Session in New Orleans.

Mr. Bergstrom is executive director of America's Dentists Care Foundation. His service to dentistry began when he served as a general volunteer for the Kansas Mission of Mercy in 2003, accompanying his wife, Mildred, a dental hygienist. “He was known only as Bruce from Lebo, Kan.,” said Dr. Gary Roberts, ADA 12th District trustee. “His hard work and passion for the project was quickly recognized and soon he was asked to serve on the Board for the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation.

“Bruce has an amazing talent for bringing stakeholders to the table and getting them to share their time and talents with the whole dental profession,” said Dr. Jeff Stasch, a general dentist who practices in Garden City, Kan., and who has worked with Mr. Bergstrom at MOM events for a decade. “Yet at a project he will be loading trucks and packing equipment. And this from a man in his 70s!”

“It is hard to fathom that one individual could be responsible for so much because there are so many individuals who have volunteered at many MOM projects,” said Dr. John T. Fales, Jr., Kansas Dental Association treasurer. “Bruce would be the first to tell you that he is a very small part of this amazing movement. I respectfully disagree.”

Dr. Warren heads professional and scientific relations for Procter & Gamble Professional Oral Health worldwide. He graduated from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and later served in academic dentistry positions. He also practiced dentistry for 16 years.

“I first met Dr. Warren as he was recruited for the Oral-B division of the company and he hosted a visit I enjoyed at the company headquarters,” said Dr. Kathleen Roth, a past ADA president (2006-07) from West Bend, Wis. “He is truly a well-respected researcher within his field and has done a quality collection of publication for our profession.”

“His efforts in the field of product development have been instrumental in providing the profession and the public with more effective disease management and preventive modalities,” said Dr. William Ken Rich, a past ADA trustee (2008-12) who has practices in Dry Ridge and Walton, Ky.

Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that Dr. Warren is “truly a global figure and authority on preventive dentistry who has been responsible for delivering worldwide improvements to oral health.”
