Dr. Makrides heads PHS dental corps

The Department of Health and Human Services announced the appointment of Dr. Nicholas S. Makrides as Chief Dental Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service with a temporary promotion to the rank of Assistant Surgeon General (Upper-Half).
As chief dental officer, Rear Adm. Makrides leads the Commissioned Corps of the USPHS dental professional affairs and advises the Office of the Surgeon General and HHS on the recruitment, assignment, deployment, retention and career development of Corps dentists. He also serves as chief dentist of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and provides administrative oversight for the bureau's dental programs.
"He is a subject matter expert in correctional dentistry, having been advisory to various state correctional systems," HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in approving Dr. Makrides' Public Health Service appointment.
In addition to his Commissioned Corps activity, Dr. Makrides serves as a consultant to the American Dental Association and serves as ADA's representative on the Board of Directors of the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare. For more information visit the leadership page at usphs.gov
