CODA announces further action on dental therapy accreditation standards

February 10, 2015

By Judy Jakush

The Commission on Dental Accreditation Feb. 6 adopted accreditation standards for dental therapy education programs.

However, the commission announced it will not proceed with a process of accreditation for existing dental therapy programs until it receives documentation showing that Criteria 2 and 5 in this CODA policy are met: Principles and Criteria Eligibility of Allied Dental Programs for Accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The two criteria ask these questions:

2. Has the allied dental education area been in operation for a sufficient period of time to establish benchmarks and adequately measure performance?

5. Is there evidence of need and support from the public and professional communities to sustain educational programs in the discipline?

The policy begins on Page 50 of CODA’s Evaluation and Operation Policies and Procedures document, which is posted on the agency’s Web page. The Unofficial Report of Major Actions of each CODA meeting is also posted on the site.

More details on this decision will appear in the March 2 ADA News.
