The ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure is granting tuition scholarships to the Academy for Academic Leadership's Institute for Teaching and Learning — as part of a commitment to support dental education and ADA general dentist members interested in academia.
Although ADA members may apply at any time during the year, the 2017 deadline is March 15. Scholarships are granted by May 1.
The Institute for Teaching and Learning is a teacher-training program for full- or part-time dental educators and private practitioners interested in an academic career. The ITL program is presented in two-phases totaling six days with distance education modules between phases. The program allows scholars to explore all aspects of academia.
The 2016 recipients were Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh, professor, oral medicine, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine; and Dr. Randall Vaught, professor, general dentistry, University of Louisville School of Dentistry.
"We're especially proud of the achievements demonstrated by the scholarship recipients and look forward to the contributions of the 2016 ADA/CDEL AAL Teacher scholars," said N. Karl Haden, Ph.D., president of the Academy for Academic Leadership, in a news release. "Now with well over 600 alumni since the programs launched in 2006, the ITL is one of our most well-received programs."
Drs. Fatahzadeh and Vaught were among 60 scholars who learned skills of a master teacher from experts in pedagogy, curriculum development, higher education administration and leadership. Held in Atlanta in August and October 2016, participants earned 50 continuing education units.
