By Kelly Soderlund

The ADA News, the Journal of the American Dental Association, Dental Practice Success and Product Development and Sales each earned EXCEL Awards from Association Media & Publishing, a trade group for association publishing.

The EXCEL Awards recognizes excellence and leadership in nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing and communications.

The ADA News won gold and bronze awards in editorial excellence for newspapers for a series of stories in a single issue. Three stories in the April 6, 2015, issue won gold, including "After Tragedy, Honoring North Carolina Shooting Victims Through Charity," by Kimber Solana, senior editor; "Surviving Auschwitz," by Kelly Soderlund, associate editor; and "GKAS Institute Lessons Fortify Two State Dental Societies' Events," by Jean Williams, former senior editor.

Stories in the June 15, 2015, ADA News took the bronze award in the same category, including "Retired ADA Member Killed in Texas Floods," by Michelle Manchir, senior editor; "Dentistry Integral in University of Michigan's First Interprofessional Education Course," by Mr. Solana; and "Medicare Enrollment Delayed," by Craig Palmer, former Washington editor.

Dental Practice Success, a quarterly digital magazine designed to help dentists focus on the business side of their practices, won two silver awards for newsletters. The winter, spring and summer 2015 issues were honored for design excellence, and the summer 2015 issue received the silver award for editorial excellence.

The summer issue included articles on practice start-ups, associateship opportunities, staff hiring, practice management and managing a practice's online reputation. Dental Practice Success is designed by layout and design coordinator Geralyn Novotny, and Arlene Furlong serves as DPS consulting editor.

The Journal of the American Dental Association took the silver award for cover design for the December 2015 issue on methamphetamines. Peter Solarz, creative director, designed the cover.

Product Development and Sales won the bronze award in the Digital Media: Mobile Application (Education) category for its Chairside Instructor App — an all-in-one resource for visual patient education, with more than 200 dental images. Users can show video clips on an iPad, draw on pictures and email them or upload photos from the device's camera roll.

"I'm very proud of these accomplishments and the talented staff who make them possible," said Michael Springer, ADA publisher and senior vice president of business and publishing. "The publishing staff work hard every day to produce publications and products that help ADA members understand the top issues in dentistry and succeed in their practices. A recognition like the EXCEL Award is a wonderful verification that we're doing our jobs well."

The winners were announced in April and were honored during the 36th Annual EXCEL Awards Gala.
