Comments and volunteers sought for digital radiography standard

September 16, 2016 The ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics has approved for circulation and comment a standard related to digital radiography.

The committee also is seeking volunteers for Working Group 12.1 on Digital Imaging to participate in the development of the standard, Proposed American National Standards Institute/ADA Standard No. 1094 for Quality Assurance for Digital Intra-Oral Radiography.

Quality assurance in radiography refers to the consistent production of X-ray images of high quality in order to provide the maximum amount of diagnostic information with minimal radiation exposure to the patient. While most states and regulatory bodies have guidelines for quality assurance protocols that must be performed regularly on all radiography equipment, these were developed primarily for X-ray film devices.

With most dental practices now utilizing some form of digital radiography, development of an effective quality assurance program for the components of digital radiography systems is critical for accurate patient diagnosis and safety, according to the committee.

Those interested in joining the development effort can contact Paul Bralower, manager of standards for the ADA Center for Informatics and Standards, by e-mail at or by calling 1-312-587-4129.

The draft document is available for review and comment by calling the ADA toll-free number, ext. 2506, or sending an e-mail request to
