Join the Tooth Team for National Children’s Dental Health Month

Are you on the Tooth Team?
Everyone is invited to join the oral health-promoting squad in February for National Children’s Dental Health Month.
The annual, month-long campaign invites dental and other health care professionals and educators to come together and promote the benefits of good oral health care to children and their caregivers. This year, the theme is Tooth Team, based on the poster and activity sheets concept created by Jade Rector, an art student at Columbia College Chicago.
For the first time this year, the ADA held a contest among art students at the college to design the winning National Children’s Dental Health Poster.
Ms. Rector, a junior studying illustration and teaching at Columbia, said she wanted to convey “a sense of joy and teamwork” in her creation, which features three children and a friendly dog posing with luminous smiles around an oversized tube of toothpaste, a toothbrush and a spool of floss. At the top of the poster, which reminds children to brush their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth, “Tooth Team” is written in bubble letters.
The same characters appear on four activity sheets, including a coloring sheet and puzzles, which Ms. Rector also designed.
“I wanted it to be goofy, colorful and representative of all the children who might see it,” Ms. Rector said of her work. “I hope that this poster supplements a kind and encouraging attitude regarding dental hygiene in the dental office. An effective dental regimen might seem overwhelming for kids, so I hope that the silliness of my poster can bridge the gap between reluctance and confidence.”
The ADA each year provides dental professionals with free oral health posters and activity sheets targeting youth. Large, full-color copies of the posters, available in English and Spanish, can be ordered in preparation for February’s celebration. Free, bilingual downloads of the posters and four Tooth Team activity sheets are also available. Visit ADA.org/NCDHM
for all materials.
Crest + Oral-B, in collaboration with the ADA, supports dental professionals and educators during National Children’s Dental Health Month with education, resources and materials available at dentalcare.com.
The ADA will celebrate the 77th year for the program in 2018.
It began as a one-day event Feb. 3, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1981 the ADA House of Delegates extended it to a month-long observance. Local observances of National Children’s Dental Health Month often include poster displays, coloring and essay contests, health fairs, free dental screenings, museum exhibits, classroom presentations and dental office tours.
