ADA Publishing leadership changing hands

A leader in science communications will take the helm of the ADA Publishing division beginning in March, when current senior vice president and publisher Michael Springer retires.

Michelle Hoffman, who most recently served as the executive director of communications for Columbia University's Data Science Institute in New York, will oversee the division that produces The Journal of the American Dental Association, the ADA News and numerous digital publications, including Dental Practice Success.

 "The ADA is one of the most influential healthcare organizations in the country, and its publishing program one of the most significant vehicles for advancing care in America," said Ms. Hoffman. "I am honored to join the extremely talented publishing team at ADA and to support members with information about clinical and technological advances, while providing the regulatory, economic and cultural context members need to deliver the finest possible care to their patients and communities."
 
Prior to her role at Columbia, Ms. Hoffman worked as the executive editorial director at the American Hospital Association, the director of scientific journals at the American Society for Clinical Pathology and a writer/editor at other scientific publications, including CELL, Science, and American Scientist. She has a bachelor's degree in biology from Brown University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Ms. Hoffman's arrival at the ADA is in tandem with the upcoming retirement of Mr. Springer. He has served as publisher since August 2010 and as senior vice president for ADA Business and Publishing since 2013.

During his tenure, he is credited with procuring new business opportunities across the Association. He oversaw the launch of the ADA's morning newsletter, the Morning Huddle; improved the Publishing division's financial health; increased ADA ad revenue; moved the ADA from a print-centric operation to the leading digital publisher of dental information; and maintained the leading position in readership for the ADA News and for JADA.

"ADA has always been a leader in information for the dental profession," he said. "By opening new channels and developing new products, the ADA is well positioned for the future."   

Mr. Springer said he looks forward to spending time with family and traveling in retirement.
