DDS Safe from The Digital Dental Record, a managed online data backup and recovery solution endorsed by ADA Member Advantage, announced in January an enhanced version of its backup system that could help dentists restore their information even faster.

DDS Safe PRO provides dental offices with advanced networks the option to complete a full image backup of their system.  This enhanced backup allows a dental practice to recover its information up to twice as fast as a traditional backup, likely saving the dentist time and money, said Steve Newton, vice president for The Digital Dental Record.

“For example, if a dentist makes about $1,000 in production an hour, that dentist could save thousands of dollars by cutting a complete system restore from five or six hours to two or three,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for dentists who have invested in their IT networks to take advantage of the technology they have and incorporate a backup system that can provide a true financial benefit to their practice.”

Unlike the traditional dental office backup, which backs up information by selecting specific files and folders, and then restoring individual information from the copy of the files and folders, DDS Safe PRO will backup the operating system and all its applications at a specific point in time.  This information is stored in a single file called an “image” and can be used to restore a system more quickly.

Both DDS Safe and its PRO version provide a three-layer protection system that backs up patient information online, to a workstation and on an in-office drive. The systems help ensure that dental practices are meeting Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act standards by encrypting data using a 256-bit advanced encryption standard.

“HIPAA requires a dentist to have a copy of their data offsite,” he said. “This system makes it more convenient for a dentist to store it in the cloud in a safe and secure encrypted location.”

ADA members are eligible to receive up to 25 percent off their first year of backup and recovery. For more information, visit or call 1-800-243-4675. The Digital Dental Record is part of the Wisconsin Dental Association Insurance and Services Corp.
