July 19 webinar to focus on status of opioid crisis
June 18, 2018
A free July 19 ADA webinar, Opioids: Current Status of the Crisis, Response and Future Directions will address the current state of the opioid crisis, prescribing trends and steps being taken to address the crisis.
Scheduled from 2-3 p.m. CDT, the webinar offers one hour of continuing education credit through the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program.
The Association on March 26 announced a new interim policy
on opioids that supports prescription limits and mandatory continuing education for dentists. The new policy, Interim Board Policy on Opioid Prescribing, is believed to be one of the first of its kind from a major health professional organization.
Scott Winiecki, M.D., of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will lead the webinar. He is the team lead of the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and a member of the organization's professional affairs and stakeholder engagement staff. After 12 years in private pediatric practice, Dr. Winiecki joined the Safe Use Initiative at the FDA, continuing his work in promoting patient safety and reducing preventable harm.
In the webinar, the role of the FDA and state prescription drug monitoring programs will be discussed and recent publications on appropriate prescribing as related to dentistry will be reviewed. The webinar will also cover safe disposal of unused medication in order to decrease the risk of diversion and abuse.
