Dental organizations, institutions thank Rep. Babin for student loan reform bill

May 23, 2018

Washington — Seventeen dental organizations and institutions on May 22 thanked Rep. Brian Babin for introducing a bill that would provide interest-free deferment on student loans for borrowers serving in a dental or medical internship or residency program.

Rep. Babin, R-Texas, who is also a dentist and ADA member, introduced HR 5734, the “Resident Education Deferred Interest Act” on May 9.

In the letter, the groups — led by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons — thanked the congressman for his support and noted that passing the legislation is an important part of student loan repayment reform.

“This bill would save dentists in residency thousands of dollars in interest,” the organizations wrote. “Providing interest accrual relief during residency also would make the concepts of opening practices in underserved areas or entering faculty or research more attractive and affordable to residents.”
