Free ADA webinar Aug. 29 to explore self-funded dental plans

If a dentist has ever wondered why a dental plan doesn’t follow laws in their state, or why a secondary dental plan did not make any payment in addition to the primary plan’s payment, there are answers in an upcoming free ADA webinar.
Self-Funded (ERISA) Dental Plans: What You Need to Know will stream Aug. 29 from noon-1 p.m. Central time.
The webinar offers one hour of continuing education credit for all those who remain connected for at least 45 minutes.
The above questions are common concerns with self-funded dental plans governed by a federal law called the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, more commonly known as ERISA. A self-funded dental plan is a benefit plan in which the plan sponsor, i.e. an employer, is responsible for payment of claims and hires a benefit carrier to administer the plan and process claims. These third-party administrators provide call center support services, networks and other administrative support but don’t face any financial risk from claim costs.
In this webinar, Ron Bolden, vice president of Dental Market Insight at CIGNA., will discuss the differences between self-funded and fully insured plans, why some employers self-fund dental plans and related questions. Jerry Berggren, director of research and information at the National Association of Dental Plans, will also offer his perspective.
Two representatives from the ADA’s Council on Dental Benefit Programs — Drs. Chris Bulnes and Hope Watson — will present ADA views based on best practices and policy adopted by the ADA’s House of Delegates regarding self-funded plans. Dr. Bulnes is chair of the council.
