DEA warns of scammers impersonating federal agents

February 25, 2019

The Drug Enforcement Administration is warning doctors and pharmacists about criminals posing as DEA agents as part of an extortion scheme.

The imposters call the victims and ask if they purchased drugs online or by phone. If the victim says yes, they are told they must pay a “fine” via wire transfer and threaten to arrest those who refuse to comply. Another scenario involves the imposter saying the victim is under investigation and that money will clear up the matter.

The DEA webpage where people can file a report about this is available at https://apps.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/esor/spring/main?execution=e1s1.
