Proposed technical reports available for review

February 13, 2019

The ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics has approved for circulation and comment proposed revisions of three ADA technical reports.

The ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics develops informatics standards and technical reports to assist the dental profession with hardware and software selection, digital photography, interoperability, data security and more. The committee comprises 44 voting members from the profession, dental industry, academia and the government. The committee is organized into four subcommittees and 24 working groups working on the development or revision of technical reports or standards.

The reports ready for review are:

  • Proposed revision of ADA Technical Report No. 1041, Content of Electronic Laboratory Prescriptions. This report, revised and updated, establishes guidelines for the format and content of patient data to be transmitted electronically to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of dental restorations. Another goal is to provide information on electronic data privacy and security. A chart of dental laboratory prescription requirements by state is included.
  • Proposed revision of ADA Technical Report No. 1054, Electronic Dental Laboratory Prescriptions. This report recommends the format and content of the terminology used in a laboratory prescription form for types of appliances to be transmitted electronically to a dental laboratory, along with the patient information recommended in ADA Technical Report No 1041.
  • Proposed revision of ADA Technical Report No. 1075, Electronic Orthodontic Dental Laboratory Prescriptions. This establishes guidelines for the format and content of patient data to be transmitted electronically to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of orthodontic appliances. It recommends the format and content of terminology used in a laboratory prescription form for the types of orthodontic appliances to be transmitted electronically to a dental laboratory.

Copies of the reports are available by calling the ADA at 1-800-621-8099, Ext. 2506, or sending the request to standards@ada.org.
