Volunteers needed for dental project in St. Lucia
February 06, 2019
Come together: A team of 1000 Smiles volunteers for a 2016 humanitarian trip in St. Lucia poses together.
Great Shape!'s 1000 Smiles project in St. Lucia is recruiting volunteers for trips this July and August.
Great Shape! Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit that operates the 1000 Smiles volunteer dental project in St Lucia, Jamaica, and Grenada. Now in its 17th year, it is the world’s largest, international, humanitarian volunteer dental program with more than 570 volunteers a year.
The project, founded by Joseph Wright and Dr. Sherwin Shinn, recipient of the 2013 ADA Humanitarian Award, seeks dental professionals and nondental people alike: dentists, hygienists, assistants, front-desk staff, family members, friends and anyone who wants to serve others in need.
Volunteers are needed for the weeks of July 19-28 or July 27-Aug 5 to spend one week providing free dental care and education to the people in high-needs communities in St Lucia.
Services provided may be X-ray examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, sealants, root canals, dentures and oral health education.
Each participant must pay airfare, a $900 project fee and bring supplies they'll need to do their work. This year, volunteers can use the code “ADA Special” to pay a discounted project fee of $700 when applying online. All expenses are tax deductible.
All-inclusive accommodations at Sandals Resorts and in-country transportation are free, compliments of a partnership with the Sandals Foundation.
In 2018, the nonprofit’s fourth year in Saint Lucia, Great Shape! provided dental care for over 1,000 Saint Lucians. They also served more than 30 inmates at the Bordelais Correctional Center over the course of three days with urgent dental care services.
