The ADA Council on Dental Practice will have plenty going on in 2019. Special continuing education programming this year includes the ADA's first elder care symposium, a BIG Idea conference on practice transitions, and the biennial dental wellness conference.

"The council and ADA staff are planning great events for 2019," said Dr. Stacey K. Van Scoyoc, chair of the ADA Council on Dental Practice. "The council is committed to the ADA's goal to present meaningful CE on topics of interest to member dentists and we encourage dentists to attend those events that have relevance to their practices."

Mark your calendars for these three CE events offered by the council in 2019:

  • June 28: Elder Care Symposium. The symposium is intended to boost awareness of elder care and oral health among dentists and marks the first time the ADA has offered this type of programming. According to Dr. Mike Medovic, chair of the ADA National Elder Care Advisory Committee and CDP member, the goals of the symposium are to highlight the relationship between oral health and systemic health among this highly vulnerable population and to present reliable and credible information and practical solutions for dentists to succeed in improving the oral health, and overall health, of the senior population. "We're stepping up to this issue, because we recognize that it's appropriate for the ADA to be the leader in discussions regarding dental care for the elderly population," Dr. Medovic said. The daylong conference takes places at the ADA Headquarters in Chicago and is open to all dentists.
  • Aug. 9: BIG Idea 2019 — Transitions. This conference at ADA Headquarters will focus on dental practice transition options and strategies. Two key topics for the conference include helping dentists identify the right time to start thinking about transition planning and identifying and analyzing the factors that drive the value of a dental practice. "No matter where you are in your career, this conference can help you assess all of the elements you should consider before a major practice transition," said Dr. Nima Aflatooni, chair of the council's Practice Management Subcommittee.
  • Aug. 16: 2019 Health and Well-Being Conference. This conference, also at ADA Headquarters, developed with the council's Dental Wellness Advisory Committee, will focus on career burnout and stress management. "Data from the council's 2015 health and well-being survey found that nearly half of all respondents felt they worked too much," said Dr. Douglas Wolff, chair of the council's Health, Wellness and Aging Subcommittee. "It also revealed that 11 percent of the responding dentists would not select dentistry as their career if they had the chance to make the decision again," said Dr. Wolff.  "While that's not an overwhelming percentage, the ADA wants all dentists to realize professional fulfillment and satisfaction in the practice of dentistry. This conference will offer more insights into the issue and provide guidance on ways to achieve sustainable work-life balance."

Individuals interested in getting updates on any — or all — of the conferences should send an email to dentalpractice@ada.org and ask to be notified once the final agenda for the conference they're interested in is available. Details, once finalized, will also be available online at https://success.ada.org/en/education/upcoming-conferences.

These programs are not the only CE offerings planned by the council. It is also planning a Dental Practice Excellence series of free continuing education at September's ADA FDI World Dental Congress in San Francisco, in addition to a team-building track that is a returning favorite. Webinars on various practice management and health and wellness activities will also be offered throughout the coming year.
