— Those with questions about the July 14, 2020, amalgam recycling rule deadline can get answers from a representative from HealthFirst at the at the ADA FDI World Dental Congress in the Practice Institute area.
Bryan Foss, product manager for the environmental and infection control product lines at HealthFirst, the amalgam recovery solution endorsed by ADA Member Advantage, will answer questions about amalgam safety at the “Meet the Expert “ counter on Sept. 7 from 12:30-1:30 pm.
The amalgam recycling rule is an implementation of the Clean Water Act signed by the Environmental Protection Agency, designed to reduce the discharge of amalgam waste from dental offices into municipal sewage. The entire rule may be read here
Current estimates indicate that less than 1% of the mercury released into the environment comes from dental preparations and uses, according to the EPA. The majority of mercury from dentistry-related origin is in the form of elemental mercury in amalgam and not methylmercury, which is the form of mercury of particular environmental concern.
American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Standard No. 109 defines amalgam waste as including amalgam (scrap), chair-side trap filters containing amalgam vacuum pump filters containing, amalgam, saliva ejectors if used in dental procedures involving amalgam, used amalgam capsules, extracted teeth with amalgam restorations, and waste items that are contaminated with amalgam.
