July 23, 2019
— The University of Nevada Las Vegas announced July 17 it named Dr. Lily T. Garcia as the next dean of its School of Dental Medicine, effective Sept. 1.
Dr. Garcia, who currently serves as associate dean for education at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, seeks to focus on strengthening faculty at UNLV dental school and to expand the school’s ties to community partners, along with state and local leaders.
“I want students not only to feel UNLV is a great learning environment, but that Nevada is a great place to grow professionally and to thrive in their practices while providing good oral health care for our community,” Dr. Garcia said in a news release. “We are moving toward person-centered health care. Oral health is part of overall health.”
A lecturer, researcher and author, Dr. Garcia specializes in prosthodontics. Her research focuses on effective replacement teeth including dental implants as anchors for intraoral prosthodontics rehabilitation.
In addition, Dr. Garcia has published numerous articles, abstracts and has co-authored and edited textbooks, including “Removable Partial Dentures: A Clinician’s Guide, Physical Evaluation in Dental Practice.” She co-edited the “2019 Dental Clinics of North America — Prosthodontics” and has served on editorial boards of dental journals including the editorial council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
“Lily Garcia is an exceptional leader whose research and teaching have been nationally recognized,” said UNLV Provost Diane Z. Chase in a news release. “We are eager to see her implement her vision for the School of Dental Medicine and help us move forward with our aim of becoming an Academic Health Center.”
