ADA webinars in May focus on e-cigarette use, expectant mothers’ oral care

May 07, 2019 Two webinars presented by the ADA Council on Advocacy on Access and Prevention are scheduled for late May and will shine a spotlight on expectant mothers’ oral care and e-cigarettes, respectively.

The first webinar, scheduled for May 20 at 11 a.m. Central time, is E-cigarettes — What are the Facts Behind All That Vapor?

The presenters are Brian King, Ph. D., deputy director for research translation for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Barbara Schillo, Ph.D., vice president of the Washington, D.C.-based Truth Initiative Schroeder Institute; Steve Schroeder, M.D., director of the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at the University of California, San Francisco; and Shinae Kim, Ph.D., project leader at the ADA Foundation Volpe Research Center. Dr. Kim’s research includes establishing a scientific standard testing platform including e-cigarette testing devices and e-liquid reference materials. She is also investigating the effects of e-cigarette flavors on oral health, including how the sweet flavors affect microbial adhesion changes to enamel, biofilm formation assay and enamel hardness change.

The purpose of this webinar is to inform dental providers about the products, trends for use and health harms and benefits of e-cigarette use. The program will also provide information about the effects of e-cigarette flavors on oral health. Finally, participants will learn about the efforts to address the harms that e-cigarette products pose to young people.

Participants will learn the reasons why oral health is important for pregnant women and how to manage dental care during pregnancy. They will also learn how to incorporate oral health into prenatal care.

The lecturers for the webinar are: Dr. Monica Hebl, a member of the ADA Council on Dental Accreditation; Lucie Chie., M.D., director of obstetrician-gynecologists at the South Cove Community Health Center in Massachusetts; and Lauren Barone, senior manager of pediatric practice and workforce for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
