NPI enumeration webinar scheduled for two dates in November

October 11, 2019

By David Burger

The ADA is presenting a continuing education course on National Provider Identifier enumeration on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. Central time each date.

The National Provider Identifier, or NPI, is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act administrative simplification standard that has been in effect since May of 2007 for most of the industry and 2008 for almost all of the rest. The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System is responsible for processing new NPI applications and processing changes of information for previously enumerated providers.

Used mainly for billing-related activities, the NPI is a unique, standard identification number that can specify organizations (such as dental professional corporations or group practices), parts of organizations (such as independent facilities or divisions within a larger parent organization that need unique identification for billing purposes), and individual dentists and physicians. NPIs that identify individuals are classed as “Entity Type 1” NPIs, while those that identify organizations (or parts thereof) are “Entity Type 2.”

In addition to billing, individual NPIs are needed to identify a treating, referring, or prescribing doctor, or for dentist credentialing-related activities.

The webinar provides one hour of CE credit. The second iteration is on the same content but is not a recorded version of the first.

This webinar will aim to answer the most common questions about NPI enumeration. After completing this webinar, participants should be able to apply for an NPI of either entity type, and update its associated data in a timely manner.

Participants will also:

• Understand the distinction between billing provider and treating doctor, identify their practice's billing provider, and ensure that the billing provider is correctly enumerated, whether an individual or an organization.
• Understand how dental practice business models impact NPI enumeration schemes and ensure their NPI enumeration scheme reflects practice business needs.
• Be able to prepare a dental claim for submission using an NPI enumeration scheme that matches practice business realities and needs.

This webinar is for dentists — particularly new dentists — and those who are dealing with a practice transition of some type (e.g., taking on a new associate, expansion, acquisition of a new facility or retirement) and office managers, especially those with questions about NPIs and their role in billing.

The webinar will be recorded and remain as a free member benefit on the ADA Center for Professional Success after Nov. 22.
