Letters: Opioid treatment

April 16, 2018

I am writing in response to the Jan. 22 My View piece by Dr. Omar Abubaker, "Opioid Addiction: Perspective From a Father, Clinician and Educator," who shared his experience as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who lost his son to an opioid addiction. I trained in Dr. Abubaker's time period, and everything he said in the article rang true. I was trained to treat my patients' pain generously and have been having a hard time changing my habits. But reading about Dr. Abubaker's experience was an epiphany. I am now reading the current literature and changing my habits. I just wish it hadn't taken a colleague's tragedy to inspire me to change.
