Dr. Nicholas Hammond manages the day-to-day activities of the ADASRI Department of Innovation & Technology Research. In addition to overseeing the strategy for the department, he defines its research agenda, builds collaborations with external research institutions, represents ADASRI at NIST, manages ADASRI’s intellectual property portfolio and licensing, and mentors the department’s researchers. Dr. Hammond's areas of interest include pharmacology and therapeutics, business operations, materials science, and commercialization.

Cicely Acosta supports ADASRI staff with identifying grant opportunities from private and public sector funders. In addition, she manages pre- and post-award activities and operations. Cicely's areas of interest include business operations, research funding, grants administration, grantsmanship, and grants compliance.

Dr. Stella Alimperti develops new tissue and regenerative therapies for craniofacial and dental diseases through the use of organ-on-a-chip technology, vascular biology, and 3-D printing technologies. She is currently studying therapies to combat bone diseases, such as osteogenesis imperfecta. Dr. Alimperti's areas of interest include tissue engineering, vascular biology, organ-on-a-chip, and 3-D printing technology.
Theresa Biddinger, MS
Theresa (Terrie) Biddinger studies novel bioactive materials that could yield a new class of dental restorations with both antimicrobial and remineralizing capabilities. Her areas of interest include restorative materials, desensitization and remineralization, antimicrobial materials, and bone and dental cements.

Dr. Diane Bienek conducts applied research and product development studies designed to improve patient care by advancing point-of-care technologies for mitigating and treating post-operative complications. She is part of an interdisciplinary team for the advancement of bioactive polymeric materials. Dr. Bienek's areas of interest include restorative materials, antimicrobial materials, infection control, research dissemination and communications, and business operations.

Dr. Kevin Byrd is a clinician-scientist, currently serving as ADASRI's founding Anthony R. Volpe Research Scholar, a position supported by a five-year grant from Colgate-Palmolive; he also serves as the manager of oral and craniofacial research. Dr. Byrd’s active research program is focused on understanding 1) oral epithelial cell heterogeneity and how these diverse cell subpopulations regulate—and are regulated—to cause disease and 2) the role of the oral cavity in systemic inflammatory diseases. To answer these questions, his lab uses 2-D/3-D human and mouse epithelial model systems, flow cytometry/cell sorting, advanced microscopy techniques, and single-cell/spatial omics. Dr. Byrd's areas of interest include stem cell biology, mucosal immunology, single-cell omics, virology, and oral-systemic interactions.

Dr. Quinn Easter conducts research at the Lab of Oral and Craniofacial Innovation (LOCI) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He studies oral epithelial heterogeneity using single-cell mRNA sequencing and is broadly interested in oral-systemic health. Dr. Easter's areas of interest include restorative materials, pharmacology and therapeutics, single-cell omics, and microscopy.

Anna Kalmykov is an electroanalytical chemist who studies the creation of novel dental materials through the development of biosensor platforms, fabrication of ultramicroelectrodes, and modification of surfaces with specific chemical functionalities. Her areas of interest include restorative materials, 3-D printing technology, periodontics, electrochemical biosensors, and flexible sensors.

Dr. Eaman Karim studies the ionizing radiation-induced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) properties of carbonated hydroxyapatite cements and assesses the feasibility of using these materials as EPR calibration references and, potentially, as dosimeters. Dr. Gili Kaufman uses 3-D human organotypic oral, dental, and bone cell-based platforms to study and develop innovative therapeutic strategies and advanced biocompatible materials and scaffolds for treating periodontal and endodontic diseases. His research introduces new capabilities to regulate the healing and repair processes of the injured tissue, prevent and/or eradicate infections, and induce tissue mineralization. Dr. Kaufman's areas of interest include 3-D organotypic platforms, regeneration and repair, tissue mineralization, therapeutic strategies, and antimicrobial agents and activity.

Dr. Eun-Jin Lee is a bone biologist whose research focuses on engineering a 3-D platform to deconvolute the dynamic contribution of endothelium to bone microenvironment initiated by inflammatory and genetic cues. These 3-D microphysiological models can be used as diagnostic tools for drug testing and the identification of new targets involved in inflammatory craniofacial diseases. Dr. Lee's areas of interest include 3-D printing technology, bone, bone-on-a-chip, bone regeneration, tissue engineering, and microvasculature.
