A ‘who’s who’ of ADA professional staff
Transitions taking shape at the ADA over the past few years have included a number of changes in senior management. What follows is a “who’s who” of current ADA senior managers, presented in alphabetical order:
Helen McK. Cherrett, senior director, Global Affairs—Ms. Cherrett heads the Division of Global Affairs, newly formed to manage the Association’s diverse and expanding international activities. Born in the United Kingdom, she holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with an emphasis on cross-cultural diversity. Among her duties, Ms. Cherrett oversees and manages the Committee on International Programs and Development, the International Development Subcommittee, the International Business Development Staff Work Group and the activities of the ADA delegation to the FDI World Dental Federation.
James S. Goodman, managing vice president, Conference and Meeting Services—Mr. Goodman joined the ADA staff in 2009 after serving as director of the Meetings Center of the American Optometric Association where he planned and executed all of the AOA’s many meetings. As head of ADA’s Conference and Meeting Services, Mr. Goodman and his staff are involved in all meeting programs and services including annual session. They also oversee such member services as discounted hotel and car rental programs. Mr. Goodman holds a degree in hotel, restaurant, institutional and tourism management from Purdue University and is a Certified Meeting Professional.
Dr. Albert H. Guay, chief policy advisor—A graduate of Boston’s Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Guay joined the ADA staff in 1992 after practicing orthodontics in the Boston area for 26 years. He is a past member of the ADA Board of Trustees from the 1st District and was a member and chair of the ADA Council on Dental Care Programs. He also is a past delegate to the ADA House of Delegates. Dr. Guay did his specialty training in orthodontics at the Eastman Dental Center, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y.
Toni Mark Hicks, chief technology officer—Ms. Hicks joined the ADA staff in October 2009, bringing 25 years of technology experience to her new post. As CTO, she serves the ADA and the membership in all elements of technology support. Ms. Hicks has led large computer operations and infrastructure support for Fortune 100 clients. She also was a leadership partner for 10 years for the Business Intelligence Technology practice for Accenture. Before Accenture, she was in leadership and technical posts for Parson Consulting, Digital Equipment Corp. and IBM. She holds a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Purdue University.
Dr. Joseph McManus, senior vice president, Dental Practice/Professional Affairs—Dr. McManus joined the ADA staff in August 2010, having served as an associate professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Health, the executive director of Faculty Practice and associate dean for Admissions at New York’s Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. He is a veteran of 25 years in private pediatric dental practice and has wide experience in both for-profit and nonprofit dental endeavors. A former dental officer in the U.S. Navy, Dr. McManus has been chief dental officer in a pediatric dental practice management firm, has served as a consultant for a major insurance company and was a management and transition consultant for a national transition company. He also served as dental director for the Children’s Aid Society in New York.
Dr. Daniel M. Meyer, senior vice president, Science/Professional Affairs—Before joining the ADA staff more than 15 years ago, Dr. Meyer was the director of Clinical Research and executive officer for the Naval Dental Research Institute. In his current post, he directs the Association’s scientific activities, including the Council on Scientific Affairs and the ADA product evaluation laboratories. He is former director of the ADA Foundation’s Paffenbarger Research Center and the Research Institute. Dr. Meyer received his dental degree from Marquette University School of Dentistry and his certificate in endodontics from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University.
Clayton B. Mickel, managing vice president, Corporate Relations and Strategic Marketing Alliances—Mr. Mickel joined the ADA staff in 1993 as associate executive director for Communications, where he oversaw development of a communications function in the Washington Office, the launch of ADA.org and a series of e-mail publications. He also oversaw the introduction of Give Kids A Smile and several other joint ventures with industry. In his current post, Mr. Mickel coordinates all interactions with industry, including the ADA’s Smile Healthy certification program. He is a graduate of New Jersey’s Rutgers University and received a master’s degree in Public Affairs Journalism from American University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Laura M. Neumann, senior vice president, Education/Professional Affairs—Dr. Neumann’s area within the ADA includes the Commission on Dental Accreditation; the Council on Dental Education and Licensure (including the Continuing Education Recognition Program); career guidance activities; policy issues related to education, licensure and special areas of dentistry; the Center for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning; the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations; the Department of Testing Services and the ADA Library. Dr. Neumann holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in dental hygiene, a Master’s of public health degree and received her dental degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she was an associate dean for Clinical Affairs before joining the ADA staff.
Kenneth Ohr, managing vice president, Communications and Marketing—Mr. Ohr joined the ADA staff in 2010 to head the newly formed Division of Communications and Marketing, charged with safeguarding the ADA’s reputation and managing its highly regarded brand. Mr. Ohr formerly led his own marketing communications firm and is a past general manager of the corporate sales and marketing group at media giant Gannett, where he later served as vice president, Advertising, for the company’s flagship, USA Today. He also managed USA Today offices in the United States and overseas and is a past senior vice president of two major advertising agencies, J. Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather.
Dr. Kathleen T. O’Loughlin, executive director and chief operating officer—Dr. O’Loughlin received her dental degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where she was the first woman in the school’s history to be both class president and class valedictorian. She practiced dentistry in Massachusetts for 20 years while also serving as an assistant clinical professor at Tufts. Dr. O’Loughlin is a past president and chief executive officer of Dental Service of Massachusetts and has provided strategic planning and business operations consulting services within the health care, nonprofit advocacy and professional higher education sectors. In 1998, she received a master’s degree in Public Health and Health Care Management from Harvard University. The ADA Board of Trustees named Dr. O’Loughlin executive director and chief operating officer in 2009. She assumed her new duties in June of that year.
Paul S. Sholty, chief financial officer, Finance and Operations—Mr. Sholty joined the ADA staff in October 2009 and leads all financial and accounting functions as well as Central Services, which include Purchasing, Duplicating and Mail Services. He came to the ADA with more than 25 years experience in financial management, having served most recently as Principal in the Financial Leadership Practice of Tatum LLC, where he was interim CFO for several nonprofit organizations. He also served as vice president of Finance, Information Technology and Human Resources for the Chicago Children’s Museum. Mr. Sholty holds a bachelor of science degree from Chicago’s Northwestern University and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Michael D. Springer, managing vice president, Publishing—Mr. Springer joined the ADA staff in August 2010. As publisher, he oversees publication of The Journal of the American Dental Association, the ADA News and their ancillary products in both print and electronic media. He also directs the Product Development and Sales Department, which develops, produces, markets and distributes more than 500 patient education, practice management and compliance products in multiple formats. Mr. Springer is a past vice president of American Academy of Family Physicians, a past group publisher for the specialty journals of the American Medical Association and a past president and chief executive officer of American Hospital Publishing Inc.
Wendy-Jo Toyama, senior vice president, Membership, Tripartite Relations and Marketing—Ms. Toyama joined the ADA staff in May 2003 with 27 years of marketing and communications experience in corporate and nonprofit settings. She started with the ADA as director of the Tripartite Grassroots Membership Initiative and the Council on Membership and was later promoted to senior vice president. Before arriving at the ADA, she worked in marketing, communications and membership recruitment and retention for the YMCA Metropolitan of Chicago. Ms. Toyama holds master’s in business administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a bachelor of arts from Indiana University.
