Georgia Mission of Mercy serves more than 2,000

Woodstock, Ga.—The first patient in line for the inaugural two-day Georgia Mission of Mercy dental clinic Aug. 12 and 13 arrived 17 hours early and offered to help unload equipment during his wait at the First Baptist Church of Woodstock. By Friday morning, the 4,000 or so people created a line 2,000 yards long, according to the GDA.

About 1,500 volunteers—dentists, hygienists, assistants, laboratory technicians and individuals from the community—donated more than $1.6 million in free dental care and provided valuable support services. Volunteers treated 2,179 patients during the event, and provided 11,275 total procedures between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days. Patients ranged between 1 to 107 years old, though most were between 21 and 60.

“We’ve been planning the Georgia Mission of Mercy since January 2010 and would not have accomplished such a successful event without the incredible support we received,” said Dr. Jonathan Dubin, co-chair. “We’re very thankful for the hard work put in by our volunteers and the generous financial and in-kind support from businesses and individuals. The experience was extremely rewarding for everyone who gave their time and expertise to help with the cause. Patients were overwhelmed with gratitude and continue to express their appreciation through letters, emails and phone calls.”

About 100 organizations and individuals offered financial and in-kind sponsorships, including the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, which donated the use of its facilities for the event. Donations covered the costs of dental equipment rental, supplies and pharmaceuticals, and food and beverages for patients and volunteers. The MOM event provided $7-8 in care for every dollar donated.
