The college was founded on Aug. 20, 1920, by the president, president-elect and secretary of the National Dental Association –– now the American Dental Association –– and other dental leaders, making it the oldest major honorary organization for dentists. It will celebrate its centennial anniversary as part of its annual meeting Oct. 14-15 in Orlando, Florida.
The college offers various courses and resources related to ethics and leadership and invites dentists to join as fellows, recognizing their contributions to dentistry and society.

In recent years, the college has organized four ethics summits and produced several white papers on ethics, he said. For the last 20 years, the college has distributed the Ethics Handbook for Dentists to dental students in the U.S. and Canada.
In conjunction with its anniversary, the college will release the American College of Dentists Ethics Report: New Professionalism, which is the culmination of more than four years of research on dental ethics, said Dr. Theresa Gonzales, executive director of the college. The report will provide extensive data and focus on defining issues and their causes rather than advancing solutions.

The college also plans to release Our First 100 Years –– the Narrative History of the American College of Dentists.
"We look forward to our next century of service and with the same enthusiasm and enduring optimism as our predecessors demonstrated in founding our organization for the expressed benefit of the profession and the public we serve," Dr. Gonzales said.
