Washington — The Department of Health and Human Services released Nov. 25 a five-minute video explaining how to search its list of excluded individuals and entities, called LEIE.
According to the HHS Office of Inspector General website, anyone who hires an individual or entity on the LEIE may be subject to civil monetary penalties. To avoid liability, health care entities should routinely check the list to ensure that new hires and current employees are not on it. The HHS has the authority to exclude individuals and entities from federally funded health care programs for a variety of reasons, including a conviction for Medicare or Medicaid fraud. Those that are excluded can receive no payment from federal health care programs for any items or services they furnish, order or prescribe.
To watch the video and learn more about the list of excluded individuals/entities, visit the inspector general’s website, oig.hhs.gov, and search for “quick tips.” The ADA Center for Professional Success has a resource as well. Visit ada.org and search “LEIE.”
