“Dr. Mays has overseen the school of dentistry’s educational programs and worked to advance excellence in all dental disciplines, especially focusing on patient care, curriculum, teaching, faculty development and student support,” said Karen Hanson, University of Minnesota provost, in a news release. “I am confident his academic leadership and governance experience within the school, and deep relationships within and beyond the school, will contribute to the school’s success.”
Dr. Mays earned his dental degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and a master of science and certificate in prosthodontics from the University of Iowa.
Previously, Dr. Mays served as a division director of prosthodontics at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. He also served as assistant director of the University of Maryland general practice residency program.
“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve in this leadership capacity,” Dr. Mays said in a news release. “The school of dentistry, like so many other health care organizations, is actively responding to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. I have seen our school manage some very challenging decisions and situations. I believe that we have some great faculty, staff and students. I am proud of their efforts and know that we can meet any challenge that lay before us.”
A formal dean search process is scheduled to commence in 18 months.
