 Service: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dental students pack bags of sand for a Ronald McDonald House fundraiser. They were among the 475 volunteers who provided about 2,000 hours of service to the local community during the UNC Adams School of Dentistry’s sixth annual DEAH DAY, or Directing Efforts And Honoring Deah And Yusor. The day of community service honors the memory of Deah Barakat, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha and his sister-in-law Razan Abu-Salha. The trio were fatally shot in 2015 by their neighbor. Deah and Yusor were UNC dental students known for their community service, including traveling to Turkey to provide dental care to Syrian refugees. This year’s efforts — from providing free dental care and seeding crops to clearing nature trails and delivering food — spanned 35 sites across four counties and nine cities in North Carolina.
