Elder care highlighted in free May 3 webinar centered on Healthy People 2030

Partner organizations include CareQuest, Academy of Oral Surgery, CDC, Indian Health Service Division of Oral Health

The eighth in a series of webinars designed to promote the Healthy People 2030 oral health objectives is scheduled for May 3, with this chapter focusing on the oral health of the elder care population.

Reducing the Proportion of Older Adults with Untreated Root Surface Decay will stream from 7-8 p.m. Eastern time, and is worth one hour of continuing dental education credit.

Partner organizations for this webinar include the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, the Academy of Oral Surgery, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Oral Health and the Indian Health Service Division of Oral Health.

The moderator is Gina Thornton-Evans, D.D.S., CDC Representative and the lead of the Healthy People 2030 Oral Health Workgroup.

The presenters include RADM (Ret.) Tim Ricks, D.M.D., dental public health specialist with the IHS Headquarters Division of Oral Health; Kayvon Javid, Ph.D, D.D.S., chairman of the Academy of Oral Surgery’s

International Committee; and Wai-Sum Leung, a project coordinator for the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health.

The webinar presenters will explore various treatments, surgical techniques and technologies that dental providers can use to prevent and treat root decay in the older adult population. They will also discuss the etiology of root decay and the importance of early intervention to prevent additional tooth damage.

Learning objectives of this webinar include the ability to identify the origins of root caries; describe the disparities that exist in older adults with untreated root decay; and how to recognize the benefits and limitations of modern surgical techniques in reducing root exposure.

Attendees of this course will also be encouraged to implement at least one health equitable activity in their community to help reduce the proportion of older adults with untreated root surface decay.

This webinar will be recorded and available at a later date on the CareQuest website.
