LED Curing Lights

ANSI/ADA Standard No. 48-2 Executive Summary

What is ANSI/ADA Standard No. 48-2 about?

This standard gives requirements and test methods for LED curing lights and the information that needs to be supplied by the manufacturer for the end user.

What are the requirements I should know about for LED curing lights?

ANSI/ADA Standard No. 48-2 sets the following requirements for the radiant exitance (often stated as “irradiance”) of the LED curing light to ensure safety for the consumer. The instructions for use shall include information on the wavelength peak(s) of the LED curing light and a recommendation for protective filter glasses.

  • Irradiance for the 400 – 515 nm region
Not less than the manufacturer’s stated value
  • Irradiance for the 190 – 385 nm region
    Shall not exceed 200 mW/cm2
  • Irradiance above the 515 nm region
    Shall not exceed 100 mW/cm2

What’s the bottom line?

ANSI/ADA Standard No. 48-2 sets the requirements and test methods for LED curing lights and instructions for use. The consumer is encouraged to check with vendors on the units’ conformance with the requirements for irradiance.
