A clinical practice guideline on the management of acute dental pain is being written by an expert panel and a team of methodologists at the ADA Science and Research Institute, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Pennsylvania. As part of the guideline's dissemination, an online CE course is being released to help teach the guideline's clinical recommendations.

Limiting the number of participating states will make it possible to measure how statewide prescribing habits have changed since the release of the online course. When this assessment of course impact has been completed, the course will then be made available to all dental providers, regardless of geographic location.
