About the workshop

Whether you're a dentist or dental educator, Dentistry for the Modern Age workshop offers an engaging, interactive opportunity to hone your skills and earn a large number of continuing education (CE) credits all in one fell swoop. For dentists, the workshop is a chance to learn the latest evidence and apply it to practice. For educators, the workshop provides instruction on how to teach others about the implementation of evidence into patient care.

When you register, you will choose one of two streams offered:

Stream #1 for dentists: How to Provide Excellent Care

Feel confident that you are applying the best available, most up-to-date scientific evidence to your treatment of patients. This stream will review the most current clinical recommendations from the ADA and provide dentists with the tools needed to incorporate this—and future—research into practice. After completing this stream, participants will be able to:

  • Quickly search for reliable and unbiased evidence to inform clinical decisions
  • Confidently apply this research to patient care.
  • Become better dentists by practicing scientifically informed treatment.

Stream #2 for dental educators: How to Teach EBD

Arm your students with the curious mind-set needed to provide evidence-based treatment. This stream focuses on pedagogical best practices for the classroom or clinic. After completing this stream, educators will be able to:

  • Build an EBD curriculum for different clinical disciplines.
  • Teach others to integrate EBD into chairside manner.
  • Harness the power of small-group learning, including case-based learning and POGIL (Process-oriented guided inquiry learning).

Continued education credits:

The American Dental Association designates this activity for 21 continuing education credits.

Past workshops:

The last workshop was held November 14–16, 2019. Each day began at 8 AM and ended at 4:30 PM. For both streams, attendees received 21 continuing education (CE) credits from the ADA.* Workshop seats were limited and filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration closed when workshop capacity was reached.

Of note for international attendees: The workshop is offered only in the English language; no simultaneous interpretation is provided.


*The American Dental Association is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.

ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.


Course tuition is $1,500 ($1,200 for ADA members with the 20% membership discount; $950 for graduate students and residents). Tuition includes all course materials, breakfast and lunch on each day of instruction. Participants are responsible for their travel and lodging in Chicago.

Please confirm workshop registration before booking travel and lodging. Full refunds are possible up to four weeks before the workshop begins (October 17). A partial refund of 50% is available after that.

Workshop faculty

Elliot Abt, D.D.S., M.S., M.Sc., received his master’s degree in evidence-based health care from the University of Oxford and his dental degree and master’s degree in oral pathology from the University of Illinois. He served on the Critical Review Panel for the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry and is a past-chair of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. Dr. Abt also teaches oral medicine at the University of Illinois and is on the attending staff at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Alonso Carrasco-Labra, D.D.S., M.Sc., Ph.D., is a dentist who obtained his D.D.S. from the University of Chile. He also obtained a master's degree in clinical epidemiology from McMaster University and a Ph.D. in Health Research Methodology at the same institution, under the supervision of Dr. Gordon Guyatt. Dr. Carrasco-Labra served as director of the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry. He is a member of the Cochrane Patient Reported Outcome Methods Group, Applicability and Recommendation Methods Group, Wounds Group, the Oral Health Group, and the GRADE Working Group. Dr. Carrasco-Labra is an author of a series of 10 articles published in the Journal of the American Dental Association titled “A Practical Approach to Evidence-Based Dental Practice" and is a co-author of the Users' Guide to the Medical Literature (3rd edition, JAMA).

Scott Howell, D.M.D., M.P.H., completed the dual-degree dental and public health program at A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH). He completed a residency in dental public health at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and is pursuing board specialty status in dental public health. Dr. Howell teaches teledentistry, interprofessional education, and public health at ASDOH. He has worked with colleagues to develop a student and resident EBD program for the Special Care Dentistry Association Annual Meeting.

Satish Kumar, D.M.D., M.D.Sc., M.S., currently serves as an associate professor and director of periodontics at A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Dr. Kumar has been an evidence reviewer since 2009 and was trained at the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD). He has served as a faculty instructor in ADA EBD workshops since 2017. Dr. Kumar teaches the application of evidence-based practice concepts in clinical settings to dental students. Dr. Kumar has published approximately 60 original articles, reviews, critical summaries, and book chapters in his areas of expertise, including evidence-based practice. He recently co-authored an invited article accepted for publication titled "Implementation Science and Periodontal Practice: Translation of Evidence into Periodontology" and two book chapters in the upcoming ADA book titled How to Use Evidence-Based Dental Practices to Improve Your Clinical Decision Making.

Kelly C. Lemke, D.D.S., M.S., is an assistant professor in the department of developmental dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Dentistry. She is the track leader for the “Introduction to Patient Care” portion of the predoctoral curriculum and also teaches EBD to undergraduate and graduate dental students. Dr. Lemke completed a general practice residency at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital and has practiced dentistry in both private practice and public health settings. She earned an M.S. in clinical investigations from the UTHSCSA Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 2017. Dr. Lemke also serves as professional editor for the International Team for Implantology (ITI) based in Basel, Switzerland; ITI is an international provider of evidence-based education in implant dentistry.

Lauren Pilcher, M.S.P.H., has been working since 2017 at the ADA, where she specializes in clinical practice guideline methodology and evidence synthesis. She holds a master of science in public health from Meharry Medical College. While at the ADA, she has contributed to the development of systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines on topics including caries management and antibiotic use. Furthermore, she has lectured at previous ADA workshops on how to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis and critically appraise systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines. She is a member of the Cochrane collaboration.

Malavika Tampi, M.P.H., worked at the ADA from 2013 to 2021 and acted as the lead methodologist and manager for the development of ADA clinical practice guidelines and evidence synthesis projects. In 2013, she obtained a master of public health degree from the University of Michigan and has been developing her skills in clinical epidemiology and evidence synthesis at the ADA since then. She has worked with several expert panels to develop systematic reviews, guidelines, and policies on topics including oral cancer, dental caries, antibiotic use, and cardiovascular disease. She lectures on how to practice and how to teach evidence-based dentistry to clinicians and academicians and also participates in workshops on how to develop systematic reviews and conduct meta-analysis. She is a member of the Cochrane collaboration and GRADE working group.

Hanann Tomeh, D.D.S., graduated at the top of her class from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry (USCSD) in 2004. She briefly taught at USCSD prior to her return to Arizona to pursue private practice. In September 2013, she became faculty at the A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH). She is currently assistant professor and a comprehensive care unit director at ASDOH, directing students in their clinical training. She has been teaching EBD at ASDOH for two years, has co-created Collaborative Dental Rounds (a D1 through D4, case-based, interactive course), and formed an evidence-based clinical task force in November 2018 to help faculty maintain evidence-based practice using current best available evidence. She has attended multiple EBD workshops through the ADA and enjoys the interaction with colleagues. She is currently working on her M.P.H.

Olivia Urquhart, M.P.H., has been working since 2016 at the ADA, where she develops systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines. She earned a master of public health degree in epidemiology from Emory University in 2016 and, since then, has been contributing to the implementation of new methods for evidence synthesis. She specializes in statistical methods for meta-analyses and has facilitated efforts to utilize methods, including network meta-analysis and diagnostic test accuracy meta-analyses, in the ADA's most recent systematic review publications. During her time at the ADA, she has worked on systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines on topics including oral cancer, caries management, and antibiotic use. Additionally, she lectures to both clinicians and academicians on how to conduct and use systematic reviews. She is a member of the Cochrane collaboration and GRADE working group.

Analia Veitz-Keenan, D.D.S., is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at NYUCD. She teaches evidence-based dentistry to under- and postgraduate students, as well as coordinates and teaches EBD activities for faculty. She completed her training in Evidence-Based Practice at McMaster University and at the Centre for Evidence-Based Dentistry in Oxford, England.

Robert Weyant, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., M.P.H., is associate dean of public health and outreach and professor and chair of the Department of Dental Public Health and Information Management at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He is also associate professor of epidemiology in the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Dr. Weyant has been teaching evidence-based dentistry for more than 10 years to dental students and faculty. Dr. Weyant received his M.P.H. and his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Michigan.
